Sailing secret remote and off grid New Zealand A huge thank you to those who help keep our boat afloat by supporting our creative process via Patreon. You can be part of the crew for less than the price of a coffee. https://www.patreon.com/CruisingKiwis You can’t set foot on The Poor Knights, there are no beaches there and the anchoring is limited and tricky. However, with its isolation from the mainland and marine reserve status, it has prospered without too much human interaction. For this reason, it is now one of our favourite spots in NZ. The fish life is astonishing, the underwater vegetation is beautiful, and it holds the crown of the world’s largest sea cave by volume in Rikoriko cave (221 by 494 cubic metres), twice the volume of two other sea caves that claim this status. We love it here, can you tell? It was sad to leave. However, on our trip down the Northland coast Javelot crossed paths with a very laid back hammerhead shark who entertained us for a minute or two. We make huge progress this week as we make a mold for the transom extension and glass the new sugar scoops in place. This was done with a mixture of polyester and epoxy resins, with 600g biaxial fiberglass. We used a honeycomb core for the extension and bulkheads, so it will be as strong as ever! Shipwrights, boatbuilders, or carpenters with shipbuilding experience wanted for S/V Hawila! S/V Hawila is an 87-year-old, wooden-built galeas of 35 m length, currently being rebuilt in Holbæk, Denmark. The ship is back in the water after intensive work on the local slipway. Now the work focuses on midship upper framing and stanchions, midship beam shelves and ceiling. We will continue in the summer with bulkheads and covering boards. You’d be hosted on-site and will become part of a strong community of professional craftsmen who’ve been dedicated to this project for more than one year. In exchange for your volunteer work, shares of the ship and sailing days will be allocated on the first Atlantic crossing voyage scheduled for winter 2023/24. Does this sound interesting? Then send us a mail to apply@hawila.org! The day has finally come for us to move out of our undersized (and now shredded) paint tent, and get our catamaran into the light of day. When we first arrived to Kentmorr Marina back in 2020, we told them we'd only need to be in the tent for 6-9 months, just enough to get all the important pieces on and close her up enough that she could move out an into the work yard. Well...not only did we have the issue of not being able to get our cabin top bonded together and even sitting in place until 2 years after the first pieces arrived....but it was just so comfortable in there that we didn't want to leave. The time has come though that project need to push forward, which can't be done inside the tent. It didn't allow us enough room to bond on the sterns or bows, and to be honest, I think we just needed that extra little push to get us focused on completion. Thanks to C&C Ventures, with their hydraulic lift, we were presented with an easy way to move this vessel, which is currently 38 ft (11.5m) long and 24.5 ft (7.5m) wide, out of our tent. And considering we only have inches to spare on each side, we needed something that could lift from underneath and come straight out. I still don't know how we lucked out with the marina manager being a part of a company which could do exactly that for us. With the tent cleared of junk, and the yard cleared of boats, we were able to make the move and be placed just next to our old spot, but now in the open air. Immediately she was set down at just about level, although we'll continue to check that over the next few weeks. Another big milestone completed, and we can't wait to see what the rest of the year has in store for us!! We hope you enjoy! Thank you SO MUCH to all our Patrons for your continued support. Start of a New Sailing Season | Grenada to Martinique (180nm). Midnight Mirage - You Only Live Once.
After 5 months ashore, I’m finally back at sea! This marks the start of a new sailing season - a 180 nautical mile passage from Grenada to Martinique for some yacht maintenance. It began with pouring rain, but soon the skies cleared and the Caribbean sun returned. The water turned crystal blue, the wind settled just ahead of the beam, and "Mirage" came alive again - reaching 9 to 10 knots most of the way. Honestly… I’m speechless. It felt so good to be sailing again! This short 5-minute video has no narration - just pure motion, sea, and music. 🎵 Music: “The Life You Want to Live Once” — Midnight Mirage, Radio Miami 85FM (1984 synth magic). Perfect vibes for a perfect sail. Next up: a few cool new upgrades and improvements I’m making to Mirage! Stay tuned. #SailingMirage #Amel50 #GrenadaToMartinique #SailingLife #CaribbeanSailing #SoloSailing #OceanFreedom
