We've had a lot of you guys requesting more affordable project boat tours, and this one definitely qualifies. The Bayfield 36 is a great boat model for a couple to own, refit, and cruise aboard. It's a cutter-rigged, full-keeled, go-anywhere bluewater cruiser at a realistic price point, and it has a bath tub! We love the design, but our two biggest complaints are engine access and the location of the chart table. Our Mizzen Mast needs a lot of love before we can put it up, So while waiting for my new Router to make the Mark III Tangs I have been working on the two antennas. This has been a journey of discovery. I needed to fit a duct in the mast, - never done that before. I needed to rivet to the mast - never done that before. We have removed all the gas, diesel and paraffin equipment, and are installing all-electric (motor, cooking etc). We headed to the nearby island of Pico... we had a minor mishap in the morning with our wake up alarm but by 10am we were on our way exploring this unique volcanic island by car. By afternoon, we'd only just scratched the surface of the island and we knew we had to come back. So a few days later, we went back armed with hiking boots and cameras, ready to climb to the top of the 2500m, Pico Volcano. We hiked our asses off to to get to the top of the volcano in 3 hours... When we got to the top we were in awe of the strange and bizarre landscape that surrounded us. Steam was coming from the top of the volcano and it looked like we'd landed on an alien planet! After a walk around the top to stretch our (very) weary legs, we then had to get back down again. No mean feat when the "path" was an almost vertical rock scramble! Many, many ankle twists and falls later, we made it to the bottom. It was a pretty amazing achievement and although our legs hurt A LOT for a few days afterwards, we were so glad we'd done it. It really was an incredible sight.
