Because we are building a boat with HH Catamarans, and their main factory is here…we were able to get business visas.  And we have been ALL business with our trips (turns out managing a new boat build is a full-time job). Thankfully, our boat is on the final stretch and sea trials begin soon.  Which means we will be ready to sail out of here before the end of the month! But we are in China!  A country we never thought we would have the opportunity to see, much less experience.  There’s no way we could let ourselves sail out of here without exploring at least a little bit of the country first.  So, we decided to take a one-week hiatus from the factory and do exactly that. China is a huge country with some of the most incredible landscapes we’ve never seen.  Luckily, China has the biggest highspeed railway network in the world.  So, we decided to pick a direction and go as far as we could.  A 2100km journey from Xiamen to the start of the Tibet Mountains in the Yunnan Province. “MAITIA”, an interesting example of the sought after Privilege 615 series by Alliaura Marine is for sale. The Privilege 615 is a blue water capable catamaran, providing every comfort necessary on board while retaining good sailing performance. MAITIA’s current owner has undertaken several upgrades including the installation of a second generator and additional winches to improve the sailing ergonomics. The most important change made by the owner is the modification of the flybridge. The boom has been raised sufficiently to allow for standing headroom, a large dining table and seating. Relatively little is known about the Thresher Shark. In Alor the local fishermen have been catching them for many years, for meat and to sell the fins. A high percentage of the sharks caught are pregnant females. Two young Indonesians heard about this and decided to investigate. They started Thresher Shark Indonesia, raised funding and then started a tagging program to gather more information. They then started working on informing the fishermen and began working with them to switch to more sustainable species and provided them with the boats and equipment to do this. We joined them in Alor to witness the culmination, the hand-over and signing ceremony in which the fishermen publicly stated their intentions to no longer target the Thresher Shark. Its very cool to see young Indonesians beginning to be guardians of their amazing underwater paradise.
