Our plans to stay in Southport NC through the end of September were cut short by Hurricane Dorian. So, with time only for minimal preparations, we left Southport and traveled south - yes south to return to our home port at Bohicket Marina. Why? It was a better hurricane hole - better protection. So, after a long 28 hour overnight sail, we immediately started to prepare PILAR to withstand Dorian's 150 mph winds in case the eye would decide to come our way. See what we did in this video. Our family of six head into the Czech Republic and visit a few towns including Prague, Cesky Krumlov and Telc on our way towards Slovakia. We are a New Zealand family of six who are taking some time out of normal life to travel and live in confined spaces. We’ve pulled the kids from school and are home schooling while on the road and the water. We spend time aboard our 34ft sailing boat in NZ and have bought a camper in Europe so as to tour the other side of the world. We’re keeping our memories on video here and the kids write narration and play guitars so we have music to use in the videos.

We try our hand at geocaching for the first time on the island of Cayo Costa in Florida. Our plans to travel South come to a stall in order to try and fix our never ending issues with our dinghy outboard. Chef Naja cooks up some mean pancakes. Welcome to our channel, Marina Rats! We are Jordan, Shira, Naja, Taj, Bug, and Beans. Sailing on S/V Brighter Days, a 2010 Lagoon 400. The channel name came about while watching the kids scurry around marina docks like little rats. Chatting it up with all of the other boats going by, and constantly eating, leaving crumbs behind them wherever they go. Compared to recent years, this winter was especially cold and snowy. With the lockdown in place we of course spent most of our time onboard Make My Day. We did however venture out into the city during the Christmas holidays and during the big February freeze. Amsterdam was beautiful as always especially with the Christmas lights along the Spiegelgracht. But it was strange to see it so empty. During the big February freeze, we saw people ice skating and sleigh riding in Amsterdam Noord but no one was skating on the canals in the city while were there. A friend of ours Heleen sent us of photos and video of her ice skating on the Keizersgracht the next day. We have shared them here. Thanks Heleen. Music by Troy and Paula Haag.

In 2017, we sold our loft in Atlanta and moved aboard a 1994 Island Packet 35 named Hope that needed some love (and boat work after sitting on the hard for over three years!). In this episode Jim and I charter the sailing school's O'Day 23 for two weekends to gain experience and put time in the water. In this video we finish off some last projects before we leave to head out on our voyage south. Among the projects is a new solar panel array that was the idea of Leontien. It was born out of an idea to make a sunshade for the cockpit but Leontien thought that it could also function as a way to install additional solar panels. 6 x 175 watts. A significant increase. We also did some courses to help us out along the way. The first was a welding course so that we learned the basics. And we also had a first aid onboard course to teach us basic medical skills. Hopefully we never need to use them! We also do our last dinghy ride through the canals of Amsterdam. It's our way of saying farewell to the city that has been our homebase for the last year.
