This year, the vent based at Erquy will serve as the world championship for catamaran raids. Which classes are accepted? F18 (21 registered) and Viper (4 registered). The appeal of the Costarmoricaine, apart from its magnificent and technical courses, is that it brings together pure amateurs, Olympic-level sailors, and big names in offshore racing such as Charles Caudrelier for the 2025 edition. Although the crews are mainly French, the event can still be considered international, with four British pairs, three Belgian pairs and one Austrian pair taking part. Brieuc Maisonneuve, our reporter on the scene, was surprised by the performance of the F18s: “I took part in an F18 raid in 2013, and I reckon they’ve gained 30% in speed, even though the ratings haven’t changed much. What’s interesting about the fleet, which is not a one-design class, is the diversity of manufacturers – there are five: Cirrus, Akurra, Nacra, Edge, and Exploder. This year, the competitors enjoyed fairly mild summer conditions – moderate winds and calm seas. On the fifth and final day of the rally, the fleet sailed to Cap Fréhel, which is where the final results, which are based on cumulative time, would be decided – capsizing has to be avoided at all costs!”

I went down to an open day at Landau Marine in Southampton as a sailor, only to discover that their new premises are on the site where the first Spitfires were built in WWII. They had a Rolls Royce Merlin engine running - the engine which powered the Spitfire, the Hurricane, the Mosquito and the Lancaster bomber amongst others. To cap it all, we had a flypast of a Spitfire which brought a tear to my wife and camera-girl’s eye. Watch the video, turn up the sound, thrill to the sound of the Merlin, and you’ll find out why. First update since I got back to the boat. Today aboard Osprey I'm walking through the boat showing where things stand as we push toward departure. A lot has been happening below decks. Both bilges have finally been cleaned properly after discovering how water from the engine bay actually splits across the internal frame and spreads into both side bilges. With everything flushed and reset, we’re installing a new bilge pump and bringing the system back into proper order. The grey water tank top is now fitted, which makes life on board a lot easier, and the mast boot is secured, reducing the water coming down the mast dramatically. On deck, I’m preparing to go up the mast today. The rig has been pumping more than it should, so we’re going to put a basic tune into the rig and start stabilising things properly. We also spotted something interesting on the backstay chainplate — the shackles were installed upside down. Those will be turned over and new lashings fitted to bring that connection back into proper order. So today’s jobs include: • Mast climb and initial rig tune • Correcting the backstay shackles and lashings • Finishing the bilge pump installation • Finalising the grey water system • Continuing preparations for departure One major job still ahead is dealing with the mainsail mast track, which is absolutely essential to get sorted before Osprey can properly head back to sea. Una quattro giorni in cui i circa 500 partecipanti giunti da 40 paesi si sono divertiti e rilassati nello stupendo scenario di Forio D' Ischia.
