Crossing international waters was meant to be smooth sailing… but that’s not how boat life works. In this episode, we face complete engine failure at sea, leaving us troubleshooting fuel systems, bleeding lines, and hoping she starts again. But that was just the beginning. A few days later our toilet pump stopped working (and yes… that’s as inconvenient as it sounds). Then our watermaker failed, and with six people onboard, fresh water becomes very important, very fast. Just when we thought we were in the clear, we had to jump in and swim under the boat to fix our blocked speedometer, scraping out barnacles and cleaning the hull so we could sail smoothly again. This is the real side of sailing life , constant maintenance, problem solving, and learning as we go. It’s not always sunsets and calm seas… but we wouldn’t trade it for anything. Next up: we sail back down the coast of Thailand toward Malaysia for our big haul out. Diving in Providenciales. Six dives on three trips. Two of the trips were off West Caicos island. Three dives were off the wall where you looked down into the abyss. During one dive I spotted a manta ray with a wind span of 8'. I was told by the dive master that it was the first manta ray she had seen in 2 years. It was also interesting diving with reef sharks. Apparently they often hang with divers. Deepest depth reached was 94'.

Vernon Deck is a great example of jumping head first into sailing and just figuring it out as you go along. He learned by watching sailing videos and doing local racing as crew, then purchased a yacht, spent 3 weeks on preparation, then untied and departed. His first 3 seasons were spent sailing the 780nm passage between Brisbane and Cairn on the Australian East Coast on a S&S 34 before buying a much faster Sayer 37 yacht and heading offshore to Solomon Islands, then onto Papua New Guinea and then Indonesia. After a lifetime of adventure and earning a living as a sports photographer, Vernon now spends half of each year in Austria earning a living and the other half onboard his yacht, cruising his way north through the Pacific.
