Riccardo De Michele ha iniziato ad andare a vela a 6 anni sul Lago di Bracciano. Le regate le aveva fatte da ragazzo, a 12 anni faceva la prua su un Brigand 750, poi una lunghissima pausa. Perché Riccardo in realtà a fare le regate per molto tempo non ci ha proprio pensato. A metà degli anni ’90, dopo tanti anni che la sua famiglia non aveva una barca, il padre decise di comprare un 14 metri, in legno, una barca assolutamente non da regata. Con la moglie Riccardo tenne questa barca negli anni successivi anche dopo che mancò il padre. Nel 2000 passò a un Waquiez 60 usato, che però non aveva la cabina del marinaio e non lo soddisfava ancora del tutto. Nel 2006 al Salone di Genova notò una barca di Vallicelli che era appena più corta di quella che sarebbe poi stata la sua, lo colpì perché non aveva nessun ingombro a poppa. Il Salone era ad ottobre, a dicembre la moglie di Riccardo si ammala e viene quasi subito operata. A volte la vità ci riserva dei percorsi bizzarri, come quello che ha riportato questo armatore al mondo delle regate. A febbraio del 2007 infattiviene sancita una sostanziale guarigione e uscita dal pericolo per la moglie, questo è stato l’imput per farsi un regalo e in qualche modo riprendere a godersi la vita dopo la grande paura. Ne parlò subito con Andrea Vallicelli e nacque l’idea di fare questo 78 piedi, il futuro H2O. Nasce come barca da assoluta crociera. Vallicelli però gli mi mise un tarlo: ma perché non facciamo un pescaggio più profondo? Poi ancora gli disse, ma perché non andiamo a fare la Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup? Fu l’inizio di un percorso che lo avrebbe portato a vincere per ben sei volte la Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup. Perché ha vinto: Quella di De Michele è una storia di amore per il mare che non è nata per le regate. A queste ci è arrivato tramite un percorso a tratti imprevedibile. Un percorso che passa dalla malattia della moglie e arriva a quel “tarlo” che gli mise in testa Vallicelli. Perché non ci proviamo? E così è stato. Con sei vittorie alla rassegna maxi più prestigiosa. Si è meritato alla grande il premio Owner del Velista dell’Anno.

This is Part 2 of our Sydney to Gold Coast boat delivery – and the miles really start to add up. After reaching Port Stephens, we set off on the long run north toward the Gold Coast. The remaining journey would push us through a couple of gruelling 30-hour legs, plenty of night sailing, and – as seems to follow the ARGO crew everywhere – more squalls and storms. At one point the wind really switched on during a night sail and we found ourselves absolutely flying. Even with three reefs in the main and just a handkerchief of jib, the boat was rocketing along through the dark. Not that we were alone out there. For long stretches we were escorted by dolphins riding the bow wave – something that never gets old no matter how many miles you sail. And in one completely unexpected moment, we even had a low fly-over from two fighter jets that certainly woke the crew up and had the obligatory calls of “negative Ghost Rider, the pattern is full”! The final leg north brought bigger seas, with much of the day spent running in 2–3 metre swell rolling in behind us. It’s exhilarating surfing down those waves – but a little intimidating seeing that wall of water chasing you along. Of course, when it came time to pull the mainsail down, we had to turn straight back into it. Howie headed onto the cabin top (tethered in, thankfully) while the bow climbed and fell over the swell. As we tipped over the edge of one wave he reckons it stood at least 5 metres high – maybe 8 if you ask him – before we clawed our way back up and finally turned to run for home. All up, the trip covered 463 nautical miles over 82 sailing hours. An incredible experience, a lot learned along the way, and even better to share it with good friends. Now… sleep. Thomas Ruyant et Adrien Hardy à moins de 24 heures du départ de la Transat Jacques Vabre à bord du monocoque de 60 pieds Le Souffle du Nord pour Le Projet Imagine. Le Souffle du Nord est une association lilloise qui a pour objectif de rassembler le plus grand nombre de forces vives autour d’une aventure sportive et solidaire hors du commun. En engageant un bateau au départ du prochain Vendée Globe, elle souhaite utiliser la médiatisation exceptionnelle de l’événement pour diffuser autour du monde le message d’entraide porté par Le Projet Imagine. Le voilier n’aborde aucune marque privée sur sa coque et ses voiles, les soutiens ayant choisi de rester dans l’ombre pour mettre dans la lumière les héros Imagine. Le Souffle du Nord rassemble aujourd’hui 73 organisations mécènes (parmi elles : Devred, Norauto, Euratechnologies, Faber France, Thiriez Literie…) et plus de 310 supporters. L’association cherche encore des partenaires pour aller jusqu’au départ du prochain Vendée Globe avec Thomas Ruyant. Le Projet Imagine est une ONG de sensibilisation et d’action, créée par la journaliste Frédérique Bedos en 2010. Elle produit des films dans un style original : le "Journalisme avec Espérance". Ce dimanche 19 novembre, à 03h 33mn 03s, Paul Meilhat et Gwénolé Gahinet ont franchi la ligne d’arrivée de la 13e édition de la Transat Jacques Vabre en deuxième position de la catégorie Imoca. Le duo aura mis 13 jours 13h 58mn et 03s pour parcourir les 4 350 milles théoriques depuis Le Havre à la vitesse moyenne de 13,36 nœuds, mais il a réellement parcouru 4 600 milles à 14,11 nœuds. Son écart au premier St Michel – Virbac est de 06h 21mn 17s. Aux vacations, ils disaient souvent « avoir les crocs » et ils les ont montrés ! Paul Meilhat et Gwénolé Gahinet étaient souvent cités au départ parmi les favoris. Ils auront été les plus dangereux concurrents de St Michel-Virbac tout au long de cette 13e Transat Jacques Vabre. En tête pendant quelques heures après le départ, ils sont toujours restés accrochés au sillage du vainqueur, soignant leur trajectoire et tirant le meilleur de leur Imoca sans foil. Ils terminent 06h 21mn 17s derrière St Michel-Virbac, un écart pas forcément représentatif de la menace permanente qu’ils ont fait peser sur Jean-Pierre Dick et Yann Eliès qui leur rendaient hommage hier soir. Offensifs durant toute la descente de l’Atlantique nord, ils pointaient encore à 32 milles et les inquiétaient à l’entrée du Pot au noir. Ils signent à Salvador de Bahia une très belle performance, preuve d’une grande maîtrise de leur support, d’une entente parfaite et d’une vraie joie de naviguer au large en duo. La Transat Jacques-Vabre, aussi appelée La Route du café est une course transatlantique en double (équipages de deux marins) qui se déroule tous les deux ans depuis 1995. We left West end and spend time in Mangrove, Crab Cay, Green Turtle Cay, and Manjack Cay. We got to know other cruisers while we hiked, and enjoyed the beaches together! James received a lesson on using a Hawaiian sling, and goes spear fishing.

We spend our last couple of days at the Palm Cay Marina in Nassau tackling a few boat chores and stocking up on provisions before heading to the beautiful Exuma Cays. The Exumas are often described as one of the most stunning, special places in The Bahamas. All of the cruisers we’ve met so far absolutely love the area, so we’ve been anxious to experience it for ourselves for the first time. From the east side of New Providence Island (Nassau), we travel 29 nautical miles in the incredibly clear blue, and at some points, shallow water to reach one of the first stops in the northern Exumas. We dropped anchor in Allan’s Cay, a very small island with nothing but rock and reef (there’s prehistoric iguanas on SW Allan’s, but we didn’t make it over there). While snorkeling the area, we spot 2 lionfish, which are incredibly invasive and dangerous to reefs. They have invaded The Bahamas and much of the Caribbean, have no predators, and each fish releases over 2 million eggs per year. (You can read more about lionfish here: https://oceanservice.noaa.gov/facts/lionfish-facts.html) Keegan has been eager and excited to start spearfishing, we just haven’t seen many fish up until this point. So with his Hawaiian Sling, dives down for his first catch! We’ve known about lionfish and their threat to the reefs for years, we’ve just never had the opportunity to remove any - so this was an exciting moment. After a few days in Allan’s Cay, we head a bit south to our next destination - Norman’s Cay, another favored stop for cruisers.
