After 32 Days at Sea we finally make it to Nuku Hiva in the Marquesas Islands. It was quite a long sail with a mix of conditions and we are all excited to arrive. We enjoy the incredible scenery of the Marquesas as we sail along the southern part of Nuku Hiva Island. What an incredible looking island which we cant wait to go and explore. Our friends are there to welcome us as we arrive in the bay. Sailing the Bay of Green Bay south of the Oconto Shoal in 16 knots of breeze out of the SSW.
After a delayed start, caused by a strong southerly hitting Sydney right on the scheduled Friday evening start time, the fleet left Sydney Harbour on Saturday morning under grey skies in a building SSE breeze. Ichi Ban led the fleet past North head as patches of sunshine lent some colour to the action. The upside of the delayed start was the opportunity to film the entire fleet in daylight.
We go out for a ride on the dinghy for some photos, Steph goes to the lily festival with a friend and we see tons of fish in our marina.
THIS WEEK: We have had an amazing couple of weeks Sailing Northern Exumas and visiting Allans Cay to see some Iguanas, Longs Cay to escape an Easterly, Shroud Cay for some excellent kayaking, and finally on to Staniel Cay where, yes, we stopped at Piggy Beach. And Chris made THE BEST Conch Fritters! Here is his recipe: (music credits below recipe, check em out!) ***We started with two large conch and then used what we had on hand. Improvisation! Cut and tenderized using a meat mallet. Marinade overnight (or minimum 3 hours) in lemon juice, white wine, black pepper, fresh thyme, and a pinch of salt. In a food processor, pulse until fine, the conch (and the marinade juice), onion, garlic, cayenne, carrot, tomato, hot peppers (whatever you have), and fresh thyme. In a mixing bowl, mix flour, baking powder, and beer, then add in processed conch mix and stir until a loose, sticky paste forms. We had to add in about 1/2 cup more flour to absorb liquids and firm up the batter. Heat oil and carefully spoon in a fritter size dollop and cook for 5 minutes rotating the fritter every minute for an even cook. Extract, cool and eat! Prepare: 2 conch 3 oz lemon juice 3 oz white wine Teaspoon black pepper Pinch of sea salt 2 sprigs fresh thyme Process: Conch marinaded contents 1 tablespoon pickled red onion 4 cloves of honey fermented garlic Pinch of cayenne powder 1/3 cup diced carrot 1/2 cup canned tomato 2 honey fermented hot peppers 1 teaspoon fresh thyme Batter: 1 1/2 cups flour 3/4 teaspoon baking powder 1/3 can of beer (4 oz) Join us and dont forget to SUBSCRIBE to follow all our adventures. La Coruna is a beautiful place to relax for a few days after having such a crazy Biscay crossing! We go exploring, stock up on some yummy fresh Spanish food and enjoy the gorgeous clear blue waters. The kiddos discover the joys of halyard swings and we discover the not so fun problem with diesel bug, which makes us very late leaving for our sail to Vigo and we have to pass Cape Finisterre in the dark....hey ho what will be will be. Monhegan Island & Harpswell - 9 miles of hiking trails, the highest ocean cliffs on the Maine coastline, a quaint village with shops, activities and lodging, seals, and a local lobster fleet. What more could you want on an isolated Maine island? Monhegan is a small, rocky island ten miles from the nearest mainland and scarcely a square mile in area. It is accessible only by boat and is primarily a walking island. The town is quaint with plenty of interesting local spots to visits and the hikes were exhilarating. Oh, and only 64 permanent residents. We anchored next to the 142ft. Baltic Semi Foiling SuperYacht "CANOVA" Baltic Yachts are leading the development of cutting edge foiling technology in the large luxury sailing yacht market. which means less pitching and more stability. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ySzndUlIinE Mooring balls are hard to get, but well worth the effort, as anchoring can be tricky due to the water depths and the rocky bottom. Not to mention that the water is COLD even in summer, so diving on your anchor would be quite refreshing! Manana Island (next to Monhegan) just sold for at auction for $199000. It comes with a caretaker house, although it is in need of “caretaking”. Use to be the USCG signaling station. It has a tram on the other side that you can use to haul stuff up from the harbor. Be sure to take the cliff walk. https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/maine/monhegan-island-trail And visit the The Island Inn Dining Room. https://islandinnmonhegan.com/dining/ In Harpswell, we found this interesting lobster operation in Pott’s Harbor. Quite larger than the shanty drop off spots that we have seen so far on this trip. This must be where all of the local drop off spots bring their lobsters for their final journey to your dining table. It’s a hard business to be in. Your day starts between 4-5 am, no matter the weather. And there are so many pressures on the lobstermen. Tourism is conflicting - competing for good workers and implementing sound ordinances not to wake the tourists so early with loud boats. But don’t the tourists want to see and eat the Maine lobsters? Additionally, the high cost of gear, affordable coastal housing availability, and competitive pressures from overseas fishing mean less lobstermen every year.
