While working on this new catamaran line, the shipyard’s in-house designers have been looking for ways to express the spirit of a classic sail yacht through modern marine architecture. As the first drawings were made, the idea became clear. An all-around sailing yacht range ideal for exclusive getaways, charter and transoceanic adventures emerged. Sunreef Yachts unveiled the range’s first details by presenting a scale model of the Sunreef 60 during last year’s Cannes Yachting Festival. This year, the Sunreef 60 and Sunreef 80 are joining the Cannes line up in full bloom.

As we transition to a life at sea aboard “Moments in Time”, there will be some things I will truly miss from land life. One of the top things will be my garden. I start craving tomatoes as soon as my previous crop dies off from the frost. You cannot purchase a good tomato anymore. Even greenhouse tomatoes are not the same. Most modern tomatoes are hybrids, with traits that are genetically modified for uniform color, uniform shape, ability to be picked green, and yes, to rot from the inside on the shelf, all commercial attributes for shipping and selling, taste never figures into the commercial attributes. Of course, they will tell you that it tastes good, but in reality, they taste like crap. I try to plant only heirloom tomatoes. These are the only tomatoes that are naturally selected over centuries for taste. They might be white, green, rainbow, black, purple, orange, yellow, and of course red, but they all taste great. The Spanish and Dutch were the first Europeans to occupy the BVI followed by the British who exported sugar, molasses and rum. Today, the locals still fish and farm, but also participate in the new vacation economy.

Pulled the carpet out and rewired the JL M600 amp in our jeep. The carpet was full of mold and the JL M600 amp wiring was a mess. Had to replace the amp fuse holder at the battery the fell apart in my hand, really glad we found that. Re-routed the wires on the 6.5” speakers JL soundbar, and used the factory clips on the jeep to hold the wires up at the edge of the doors. Part#3 of the docutainment trilogy "The Viking Route" goes from the Åland-Islands deep inside the Finnish archipelagos and in the Viking museum in Rosala. After 4 weeks of touring with my band at the Baltic coast, my journey on the old route continues to Tallinn. Here, the long and exiting way home begins and leads me through Estonia, Latvia and Gotland. On the way I found many more traces of the Vikings. The movie again shows, beside the travel itself, the emotions of a long time-out and the ingenious navigational methods and the epic mythology of the Vikings. With circumnavigator and Viking expert Burghard Pieske I could get another very interesting person in front of the camera. In the Danish National Archives, the description of this old sea route is kept like a treasure. By coincidence Claus Aktoprak got aware of this itinerary and curiosity kicked in. This document, written by monks in Latin script, is one of the oldest and exiting sources about navigating the Baltic sea. It mentions many places which together forming - mostly sheltered by skerries - a sea route along the east coast of Sweden, over the Åland-islands and Southern-Finland to Reval (todays Tallinn). This sailing route, already used by Vikings, the 40-year-old sailboat LA MER auctioned at eBay and a kayak are the ingredients of this new Baltic sea adventure from Claus Aktoprak through the dreamlike archipelagos of Scandinavia. Dealing with the challenges of light air sailing. Sailing along the west shore of southern Door County, Wisconsin off of Riley's Bay. This was a good practice for handling light air conditions. Fortunately, the local COVID-19 restrictions don't prevent us from going to or using the boat. This is the best way to "social distance" that I know of. Better than hiding in the basement! Her LOA is 19.3m and she has a beam of 4.6m with a draft of 2.98m She weighs 33t and she can cruise at 7 kts with the engine and 8-10 kts on sail depending on the wind. She is fairly comfortable with 15 to 20 kts of wind. Freshwater capacity to last over 2 weeks and a fuel range of 13 days steaming. Its Easter long weekend and we planned on sailing to Port Vincent and stay the night and then sail home the following day, but things don't go to plan as we have engine failure while adrift on the ocean. Newbie wannabe pirates invest in a few boats, we have a Mirror Dinghy, Bruce Roberts 34, Top Hat 25 Mk1, Timber Hull 23 Alan Rice, and a 14 foot Catamaran which we are repairing, sailing around going on adventures. We are based in Adelaide, South Australia and are new to sailing so we are learning as we go, what an amazing ride stay tuned as we get up to mischief, have a laugh and go on some crazy adventures. After a few years of studying and working hard we decided it was time to make a change. We needed a change that would allow us to spend more time together, give us a better work/life balance, and the freedom to travel. While we still had time on our side, we wanted to use it to live rather than use it to chase money. Learning to sail was the answer. In December 2021 we moved onboard Te Tāiko, a Chico40, and since then we have been so fortunate to explore many of New Zealand’s pest free islands and its beautiful anchorages. With our love of travel and adventure, this lifestyle has enabled us to experience so much more than we could ever have imagined. From new experiences to meeting incredible people along the way, our life has been enriched in so many ways and makes us ever so more appreciative of our environment and the footprint we leave behind. Tāiko is our floating home. She gives us the freedom to go anywhere the wind and weather allows. By living a more minimalistic and sustainable lifestyle, she has provided us with a better work/life balance and has taught us to live and be present more in the moment. Tāiko has also taught us to be more independent and less reliant on services. Some of these experiences have taken us out of our comfort zone many times but as the saying goes, ‘a comfort zone is a wonderful place but nothing grows there’. Our plan is to do blue water cruising. So, over the next year we will be completing some maintenance work on Tāiko and be getting her ready to meet New Zealand’s category 1 requirements to be able to go offshore. Dan Farmer, owner and skipper of the Sydney 41 yacht ‘B52’, shares the story of his epic adventure in the 2021 Rolex Sydney Hobart Race, where more than 40% of the fleet retired due to damage or injuries. Dan explained crew selection, training, boat preparation and their strategy in the the first 36 hours of the race when more than 30 yachts retired in the tough ‘wind against current’, southerly conditions. Dan shares his thoughts on what went well, the importance of onboard leadership and an emotional crossing of the finish line. Our family of four visit Cypress Island, part of the San Juan Islands in the Puget Sound. Our boat is a 41 ft motorsailer that we completed the purchase of in mid-August 2021. This is our third outing, jumping off to the islands from Squalicum Harbor in Bellingham. Shane is working towards his goal of circumnavigating all named islands of the Puget Sound. While we’re there he checks Cypress Island off his list and we get to explore land while we’re there. The deep coral reds, greens, and teal blue colors are so beautiful here. The weather is pretty moody the entire weekend. It would pour rain for a bit and then the clouds would separate and the sun would come out repeatedly. The light from the storminess added to the effect of how bright the colors were. The kids had fun playing along the rocks seeing what creatures lived near shore. We’re excited to go back to Cypress Island this summer to hike more of the trails, maybe anchoring over in Eagle Harbor next time?

We left on Good Friday on a favourable tide through the Needles and across Poole Bay passed St Alban’s head and went straight into Portland Marina where the helpful staff had kept a great berth for us and resident dolphin “Danny” entertained the marina guests. Absolute dead calm on Saturday with over 20°C so we decided to go for a walk along the west side of Portland Bill. We had a good view on the inshore passage around the notorious Bill. We even observed a few yachts passing this alternative route which avoids the long detour outside the Shambles and Portland Race. So that’s sorted for next time… We also learned a few things about the habits of living on the Bill: according to common knowledge speaking out the word “Rabbit” shall bring certain misfortune… apparently, this myth comes from the time when the Portland quarries were thriving and rabbit tunnels led to uncontrolled collapsing boulders putting workers at danger of life. On Sunday the wind freshened up a tiny bit so that we could start our way back to Studland Bay. We were accompanied by another dolphin for much of the way. We set anchor behind Old Harry and Old Harry’s Wife rocks and spent a peaceful evening and an uneventful night.
