June 2019 On our way back to Florida, we noticed the motor amperage was off the charts on the starboard side. An investigation revealed that the fan had failed and even replacing it midway in the stream did not help. In this episode, we learn we burnt up the starboard motor, demagnitizing it and had to remove it, crate it, and ship it for repair. It's called a BOAT. And we all know what that acronym stands for... Nesse período ocorreu a complementação dos pontos de solda para manter fracamente posicionadas as chapas de alumínio nas estruturas de seções transversais e das barras chatas longitudinais, em seguida realizou-se o reforço desses pontos de solda para se conseguir uma solidez excepcional de modo a garantir uma excelente segurança para os soldadores na criação dos chanfros e das juntas de solda , em qualquer lugar do costado , tendo-se assim juntas dentro dos padrões estabelecidos na EPS. Preparations Departure for NL: 15.00 hours Weather: sunny, cloudy late afternoon Wind: 12-18 kts SW In particular, we prepare this day for our departure to the Netherlands. The crossing over the North Sea to Vlieland is 235 miles. Quite a bit. So we check the wind again, which according to all weather models should become westerly and later NW from 15.00 onwards. We check with our nautical friends what their stance is on GTL diesel, as that is the only thing available in Thyboron, as we would like to top up the WJ anyway. We decide to do the same just before departure. Other than that, we prepare grab fodder, make tea and seafast everything. Eat a hot meal and check the rigging. At 15.00 we go outside. Just before a shower (very handy ...hahaha). We set the sails in the bowl before sailing out. Unfortunately, the wind is not yet westerly enough, so we have to sail a course out to ‘gain height’ and that is quite against high waves, so we have to use the engine. So we are already shaking nicely. And....a bow-plank does not survive. After 2 hours, we turn around and can sail slightly better high to the course. We more or less immediately start the 3 o'clock on and 3 o'clock off watch routine and Patty goes to sleep first, as she was up a bit too early that morning and hadn't taken a nap in between..... And so we sail into the night with, unfortunately, the engine on because the wind is insufficient and the waves too high for comfortable sailing. Patty is still having some trouble coping well with the WJ's lurching behaviour. As the night progresses, the engine can finally be turned off. The wind becomes more favourable (westerly), so the WJ, despite the waves, reaches speeds of between 5 and 7 knots entirely on sail. Fine! The high waves remain, however, so we roll off a bit. We are accompanied by a white Jan van Gent throughout the sail, by the way. We sleep in our bed during non-watch times and that really makes all the difference. We don't eat hot food, but we live on constant nibbles like biscuits, carrots, apples, bananas and crackers throughout the trip. We hardly meet, except at watch handovers, where we update each other on course and any particulars. Not much happens, as it is a quiet course with no traffic systems. In the night, Patty is called by a guard-ship to ask if we want to sail around a ship that is doing a cable repair. During the night the wind picks up tremendously to in the 20 knots. We are happy about it because the WJ is in her humour. She is spinning around 9 kts of speed and so the waves are better cut too. We are happy that the promised wind is taking us nicely forward. Real sailing. Towards morning, the wind became very calm, that too according to the forecast....the sea also became a lot smoother with it and we like that too, because we are approaching the traffic systems over the Wadden Islands and they are always challengingly crowded. In the watches, it works out that Robin takes care of both systems and Patty the 20 miles in between (easy!). Root is busy, but also finds it a welcome change from the hitherto ‘uneventful’ pace. The wait for the barges (because those big merchant/container ships have priority) eventually causes us an hour's delay. We note a small tear in the ‘sunbrella edge’ of the jib due to some chafing against the spread during the calmer winds anyway. Not shocking, but does require attention. And so there is a board loose on the bowsprit from high wave biting on departure. Also not insurmountable. Patty, incidentally, gets a little more sleep time during the voyage to recover a bit from (consequences) of the hangover. So the morning to Vlieland, the last 40 miles, are quiet and calm and the sun rises beautifully. The Jan van Gent greets us again. In the sunshine, we sail to Vlieland.....and take a ‘we-are-there-selfie’. When we call the harbour, there is an enthusiastic response to the WJ's arrival. She is a familiar ship and gets her ‘familiar spot’ in front of the harbour office. As we sail in, fatigue still appears to take a small toll as we scrape off some paint...so be it. We'll fix it tomorrow. We spend the rest of the day cleaning up, walking along the beach to beach bar ‘Oost’ for a drink and a snack and on board reading, watching Max's race, sitting in the sun and, of course, enjoying all the ships entering the harbour. In particular, the steering skills of the brown fleet always has our admiration. We then have dinner at Dining and are in bed by 11pm....

Day 2 of our J109 delivery around Ireland got off to and early start before sunrise in the hope we could make up for the lost time on day 1 due to the sea fog. After getting guided out of Fenit Marina by the fishing boats under darkness we had a great days motor sailing in light westerly breeze down the west coast to Portmagee in County Kerry. The the wind light and from the wrong direction to get maximum speed we did not cover enough ground in the first 1/2 of the day to safely make the trip to Clear Island in daylight. This lead to an early but very rewarding stop over in the beautiful town of Portmagee. As a massive Star Wars fan it was the ultimate surprise to put pints in a pub a Jedi master frequented. The excitement only build further when we planned the route for Day 3 which would take us past Great Skellig Island which was Lukes home for many years. Portmagee Marina was a fantastic little marina and the Moorings Pub and restaurant was a great place to get a feed prior to the next two legs where the eating options would not be as good.

we had a busted d100 dessalator and found a cheap.way to fix it diy style. usibg a pressure washer and some stainless syeel parts from amazon we make 100Litres an hour of drinking water. a pump protector filter to par max 4 from jabsco to a 20micron pleated filter then a 5 micron filter. on to the pressure washer a basic 105bar total brand washer for 120$, then to the memranes three in series then to the panel we control the flow through a needle valve from amazon and a swagelok pressure relief valve acts as saftey. we fitted a fresh water flush and an inline tds (total dissolvable solids) reader to measure the ppm (parts per million) this 20 dollars and battery powered. the membranes we got from boundless outfitters for 230 each. needle valve and safety valves we 300 in total. all stainless. 1/4".

Vor dem Rathaus halten wir an und treffen schon bald auf Valentina und ihre Mutter. Valentina ist 5 Jahre alt aber auffallend fröhlich und selbstbewusst. Fröhlich strahlend nimmt sie mit Freude erst mich dann Brigitta in die Arme. Wahrscheinlich hat ihr das jemand so gesagt, aber man spürt, dass sie es gerne tut. Wir haben wiederholt die Plan-Vorgaben zum Schutz der Kinder gelesen und würden selbst niemals so innig auf ein Kind zugehen. Aber wenn Valentina so spontan ist … wir freuen uns. Valentina Valentina ist tapfer. Für ein Kind ist es eine Herausforderung so lange still zu sitzen. Ich versuche die Situation etwas aufzulockern und gebe ihr schon mal einen Lolli aus der großen mitgebrachten Tüte, betone aber auch, dass sie die XXL Tüte nicht allein aufessen, sondern in den Kindergarten mitnehmen soll. In den letzten 6 Monaten hat Sie aber eine erstaunliche Entwicklung hinter sich gebracht und freut sich auf unser großes Abenteuer genau wie ich. Polar explorer, adventurer and boatbuilder Jarlath Cunnane describes building a replica of the James Caird, the Shackleton Antarctic expedition lifeboat, in an attempt to commemorate the Scots carpenter Henry 'Chippy' McNish, who was a member of the TransAntarctic Expedition 1914-1917. The modifications that McNish made to the Caird enabled it to weather the epic 800-mile voyage from Elephant Island to South Georgia which Shackleton and five of his crew undertook after their ship, Endurance, was crushed by pack ice. Jarlath attempted to repeat Shackleton's epic voyage in 1997 in an earlier replica that he had to abandon in the Southern Ocean when capsized by hurricane strength winds. He then went on to build the legendary 47' expedition yacht, Northabout, in which he, together with his adventurous fellow countrymen, transited both the NW and NE Passages. Winner of multiple prestigious sailing awards, Jarlath was made an Honorary Member of the Ocean Cruising Club in April 2021. En effet ce début d'année a été compliqué car Olivier était malade et il a fallu rentrer en France en avril. les soins en Italie sont sans problèmes avec la carte européenne mais il arrive un moment ou le barrage de la langue devient compliqué. Nous avons trouvé à Licata un médecin, une pharmacienne et un radiologue au top.
