Living aboard our sailboat in Alaska means life happens in chapters. Sometimes we’re working hard in remote coastal communities. Other times we’re sailing to the next job. And occasionally we get these quiet moments in between where we can slow down and explore. On our way toward Port Protection, we dropped anchor on the northwest corner of Prince of Wales Island and decided not to rush into work just yet. Instead, we launched the paddleboards. Within minutes we were gliding across glassy water, exploring a remote stretch of coastline locals call Memorial Beach. Moss-covered rainforest, tide pools full of starfish, unusual rock formations, and a peaceful walk through the Tongass National Forest made this one of those days that reminds us why we chose this self-reliant sailboat life. Sometimes living aboard a sailboat in Alaska feels like we’ve simply moved our cabin to a completely new wilderness backyard for the night. By early September 2018, we continued to find pesky problems with the Lagoon 440 that would have to be fixed in order for us to sail to the Bahamas in November, but when weather hands you a hurricane warning, and your state declares a mandatory evacuation for your area, you shift gears and move everything inside, and batten down those hatches. Spoiler alert: while the spaghetti models initially agreed that Hampton Roads, Virginia would be in the direct path, 24 hours prior to landfall, it shifted to the south, landing just south of Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina as a Cat 1 storm. Driving from Port Resolution on the east coast of Tanna to Lenekel on the west we pass the lava fields of Mt. Yasur Volcano. The volcano has a great influence on the whole island, particularly the Cargo Cults of The Prince Phillip and John Frum Movements. We discover a bit more as we visit both of them. The tribe from Yakel had featured in a television series in the UK where 5 of them had travelled there to live with various classes of people, culminating in a visit to Windsor Castle and an audience with Prince Phillip. Karl Pilkington had also paid them a visit in his series "An Idiot Abroad" The film "Tanna" a similar tale to Romeo & Juliet had been made featuring them and was nominated at The Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film. Our first visit was to The Blue Cave, where you have to swim a short distance underwater to enter the huge cavern filled with rays of natural light from a hole in its roof.
