Vendée Globe 2012 - 10 janvier 2013 - highlights jour 62 La nuit dernière, Arnaud Boissières et Javier Sanso ont fait leur entrée en Atlantique. Ils entament leur remontée vers les chaudes latitudes au coude à coude, à quelques centaines de mètres de l'île des Etats. Ce sera bientôt très chaud aussi pour Jean-Pierre Dick et Alex Thomson, en plein duel à distance pour la troisième place. Du large du Brésil au sud de l'Argentine, la flotte est animée par une série de combats singuliers. Avec l'abandon officiel de Bernard Stamm, il ne sont plus que 12 bateaux en course. Le skipper de Cheminées Poujoulat, après un arrêt express hier soir dans l'île du Horn le temps de faire le plein de gasoil, de charger ses batteries, de monter dans son mât pour changer une drisse, et d'avaler un petit salé aux lentilles préparé par l'amie d'Unaï Bazurko, est reparti en mer, direction les Sables d'Olonne. Bernard a encore besoin de recouvrer des forces et de finir de mettre son bateau en état pour retrouver enfin le plaisir d'être en mer... un singulier combat. Les duos Cali/Bubi et Dick/Thomson à six milles l'un de l'autre Peu de temps après le départ de Bernard, Arnaud Boissières (AKENA Vérandas) puis Javier Sanso (Acciona 100% EcoPowered) doublaient le cap Horn, en 8e et 9e position. C'est une deuxième pour « Cali » et une première en solitaire pour « Bubi ». Après José Luis de Ugarte (BOC Challenge 1990-91 et Vendée Globe 1992-1993) puis Unai Basurko (Velux 5 Oceans 2006-2007), il est le troisième marin espagnol de l'histoire à doubler le cap Horn en solo et en course. Les deux marins naviguent pratiquement à vue dans l'est de l'île des Etats, dont la géographie ne devrait plus avoir de secrets pour Arnaud qui est passé à quelques dizaines de mètres de la côte. Un autre duel est en train de monter en intensité : celui qui oppose Virbac - Paprec 3 à Hugo Boss. Jean-Pierre Dick et Alex Thomson ont choisi deux routes divergentes pour entamer leur remontée de l'Atlantique Sud. Le premier s'attaque à l'anticyclone de Sainte-Hélène, au près dans 15 à 20 nœuds de vent, sur une route comparable à celle des leaders. Le second est au portant, à 300 milles seulement des côtes brésiliennes et ne cesse de conquérir du terrain. Leurs chemins devraient se rejoindre d'ici une petite semaine du côté de l'Equateur. Et ils pourraient bien se retrouver bord à bord... Les leaders bientôt dans les alizés En tête, le combat singulier entre MACIF et Banque Populaire est pour l'heure au point mort. Vers 13h30 (heure française), François Gabart a été le premier à virer dans la dorsale de l'anticyclone de Sainte Hélène. Il navigue maintenant tribord amure dans un vent qui ne va cesser d'adonner (nord-est puis est). Il sera le premier à choquer les voiles et à accélérer. Du coup, l'écart de 85 milles qui sépare actuellement les deux hommes devrait encore augmenter. Et puis il y a des navigateurs plus solitaires que d'autres. Au nord des Malouines, Jean Le Cam (SynerCiel), bien installé en 5e position, a pour seul adversaire de gros bancs d'algues. Ces dernières heures, il a dû faire trois marches arrière pour s'en dépêtrer. Encore 4 à 8 jours dans les mers australes Il reste encore trois hommes dans le Grand Sud. Bertrand de Broc (Votre Nom autour du Monde avec EDM projets) et Tanguy De Lamotte (Initiatives-Cœur) se sont libérés de la dernière porte de sécurité Pacifique. La voie du Horn est dégagée et balayée par des vents de secteur ouest. Dans trois à quatre jours, ce sera l'Atlantique. Enfin, Alessandro Di Benedetto doit encore jouer les McGyver. Ces derniers temps, il n'a jamais refermé sa caisse à outils. Aujourd'hui, l'axe supérieur du son safran tribord de Team Plastique a cassé. Le Franco-italien a opéré une réparation de fortune et devra changer cette pièce dès que ses conditions de navigation seront plus calmes...

This was our second visit, thus “another” glimpse, at the town of Tobelo and surrounds. We found our friend, Yus, at Tourism, again. He helped organize for us a dive tour off 2 of the nearby islets and another tour with a walk to beautiful Sapoli twin waterfalls, and a delicious picnic lunch at water’s edge. Later that day, we also drove to an overlook to see Lake Duma-Galeta, one of many freshwater lakes on Halmahera Island. Thanks to Yus, we were invited to the opening ceremony and VIP dinner given by the Regent, for the Festival of Gemstones, a week-long fair featuring the semi-precious gemstones found around Halmehara Island. We would like to thank the Regent of North Halmehara for inviting us to the dinner, and especially to Yus, who organized the tours and helped us with translations and other services during our visit. Saturday was lining up to be the big wind day of the RC44 Calero Marinas Cup, so windy that racing was likely to be cancelled. In the event, it was cancelled only due to a total lack of wind. With no immediate hope of racing, the nine RC44s were sent back ashore to Marina Lanzarote to await further instructions. Ultimately at 1430 PRO Peter Reggio made the inevitable call to cancel racing for the day. The RC44 Calero Marinas Cup is the final event of the 2017 RC44 Championship Tour, which pits the world's top businessmen and the best sailors in the industry compete in high-performance one-design 44-foot carbon racing yachts. We ended up buying a 2nd power sander and switched from using 120 grit to 80 grit sandpaper. We still were clogging sand paper faster than we expected. We're not even a quarter of the way done so it will probably be a few more weeks of prepping the interior for paint....that is unless we can recruit some more people to help. Any takers? In the lead-up race to the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race, Peter Harburg's Black Jack (in her first race after its thwarted trip to Monaco) led the fleet out of the Heads closely followed by Christian Beck's InfoTrack which had spent its time socially distancing in Newcastle. InfoTrack took out line honours followed closely by Black Jack. Looking forward to Boxing Day.

In this episode of Towards the Adventure, we're not quite done wrapping our sailboat for the winter when a 2 day storm hits us. Winds over 140kph/80mph shake our boat and have us rolling heavily while tied to the dock. Things fall over, and we're on edge as the storm intensifies.
