Binnen durch den Kontinent - Rhone stromaufwärts Teil 4 Unser Segelboot Squib, ein Catalac 9M, ist in die Jahre gekommen, die Verkleidung hängt teilweise von der Decke, die Farbe blättert ab, die Elektrik auf dem Stand des vorigen Jahrtausends,..... Ein Refit steht an. Doch Broterwerb und Verpflichtungen lassen es nicht zu, monatelang in Griechenland am Boot zu arbeiten. Da wird schon 2018 die Idee geboren Squib nach Wien zu bringen, wo man jederzeit Zugang hat, der Einkauf von Material in der Muttersprache abgewickelt werden kann und alles andere seinen gewohnten Verlauf nimmt. Bereits 2018 starteten wir Richtung Wien, doch ein Motorschaden in der Straße von Messina zwang uns, den Überstellungstörn abzubrechen. Am vierten September kamen wir in Wien an, 980 Seemeilen und 2120 km über die europäischen Wasserstraßen lagen hinter uns. Seitdem liegt Squib in der Wiener Kuchelau, der Refit hat bereits begonnen. The traditional heritage skills of how to make a ship's wooden deck planking watertight are shared by Sailing Into Wellness, the Irish sailing charity and proud custodians of the 1926 traditionally-built A.K. ILEN ship. It involves driving fibre (cotton or oakum) into the seams, sealing them with pitch and sanding the deck smooth thereafter. 1. Preparing the deck seams: Clean the seams by removing old pitch, rotten oakum, etc. using a reefing hook or a hot knife. Planks should be clean, dry and free of old sealer, varnish or oil to maximise adhesion. 2. Caulking: Cotton is used for smaller gaps and oakum, a hemp fibre soaked in pine tar, for larger seams. Use a caulking iron to feed the fibre into the seams and a mallet to drive it home. It should be packed tightly enough to form a hard layer at the base of the seam. 3. Pouring pitch: Traditional pitch is melted in a specialised pot, poured into a vessel with a spout and then poured into the seam, filling the groove completely, adhering to the oakum and the sides of the planks. A 'hot rod' can be used to remelt the surface of the pitch, smoothing out bubbles and ensuring a smooth finish. 4: Fairing and finishing: Once the pitch has cooled, use a sharp 'putty knife' or specialised chisel to remove excess 'proud' pitch, which 'stands' above the deck-board. Sand the deck, in the direction of the wood grain, to ensure a smooth, level and 'fair' surface. TIP: Ensure the sealant/pitch does not stick to the bottom of the seam, to avoid moisture entrapment, which leads to rot, the whole reason we carry out the above process. This week we went sailing with some friends. It was just what the doctor ordered. They have an impeccable, charming Morgan 41...a well-designed, cross-purpose boat. It looks classic, has the heart of a racer and the sturdiness of a cruiser. Take a quick peek inside! We feasted on roti and homemade bread. We sang, we played games, and Catamaran Cocktails recreated a Nigerian drink called "The Chapman"...a non-alcoholic (well, almost) mix that Micheil recalls from his childhood. It's ALMOST non-alcoholic, because it has Angostura bitters, which yes- does contain alcohol, but it's so diluted in the drink that it wouldn't much matter, its really only for flavor. Angostura Aromatic Bitters comes from Trinidad and Tobago and is made with extracts of grasses, roots, leaves and fruits. It is great for balancing drinks but it also works in cooking and can facilitate digestion and much more. We're on the move again on our journey down Mexico's Pacific Coast. This episode sees the Captain unceremoniously unplug the wifi, and the crew depart on a LOOOONG two night passage to the next state, Oaxaca! We did intend to go to the famous surfing town, Puerto Escondido... but something about its reputation hinted to Bohemia's weary crew that it may not make the best anchorage... so we carried on instead to the alternative hip town of Mazunte! We had a lot of fun on this passage despite the weak winds... even taking a pitstop to swim in the open ocean! Ansa 42 is a 41′ 6″ monohull sailboat designed by Ocke Mannerfelt and built-in Sweden by Rex Marin / Ansa Sailing AB (SWE) starting in 1979. Hull type Fin w/spade rudder. The boat has been just surveyed, you will notice all the surveyor´s comments close to each item. She is available for viewing in Port Ginesta, Barcelona. In 2020 the boat had a preventative osmosis treatment. Works included sand and strip off old antifouling, epoxy paste, and epoxy paint, and finally Antifouling. This is a yacht built for fast passage making. She had a new engine recently and is about to be lifted out for a couple of new seacocks to be installed at the owner's request.
