One of the more difficult things when sailing the Nacra 17 is upwind foiling. As if foiling alone isn't difficult enough... Not only that it is difficult it is also very exhausting. The tricky bit about upwind foiling, well one of the things, is to actually make way to windward. Not just speeding around. We try to achieve this by heeling over to windward. The angled leeward daggerboard helps to reduce slipping sideways. Also you have some windward daggerboard in the water following the same purpose. If you are just foiling leveled or heeled over to leeward like on a normal upwind only the tips of the foils could prevent drift. The risk of thunderstorms, unexpected acts of kindness, and an interesting coast lined marked my final few days sailing the Ehime Coast in West Shikoku. I had to be mindful of CAPE numbers ( Convective Available Potential Energy: see below) during my final few days sailing the west coast of Shikoku. The coastline continued to be spectacular and the kindness of people in Uwajma and Mikame is memorable, to say the least. I want to say a BIG THANK YOU to Tokuda san of Barber Cruise (https://barbercruise-marine.crayonsite.com/ ) and a fellow yachtsman who helped me procure a prime mooring spot in Uwajima. He was introduced to me by Shibafuji san, the boat designer and builder in Kochi. The developing string of friendships is special to me. Also, the ladies of the Tourist Info Centre in Uwajima went way beyond the call of duty to help. No sailing today. Despite a forecast of good strong wind, I arrived at a Lake as smooth as glass and thats how it stayed for the rest of the day. It all came down to this day. With up to three races across the 10 classes, no lead was completely safe. The IC37 class, with 24 boats, was the extreme example, but New Wave sailed to the win. In the ORC Classes, Robin Team's Teamwork won ORC D and the overall title. The regatta ended with a Rolex Awards Banquet at Harbour Court, celebrating all that is great about sailing and the top competitors in each class.

Just a quick update of the fleet of small boat sail alone and non-stop around the world.

In October 2022 we went to the Azores for 10 days. We visited 3 out of the 9 inhabited island in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean (1300 km from Lisbon and 2500 km for New York City). The third island we went to was Faial. Enjoy in the video pictures and drone footage of: - The ferry from the island of Pico to the island of Faial (30 minutes) - Horta harbour: many sailors arrive here - Peter’s Sport Café: over 70 years old, the center place for sailors to check their mail, sent messages to their family. Nowadays sailors hang their flags on the walls and ceilings of the café - The cadeira of Faial: a spectacular crater - Our hotel was an old monastery with appartements - Vulcão dos Capelinhos: the Azores still have volcanic activities, the last eruption was 70 years ago, this young volcano can be visited - Whale and dolphin watching: we went on a 3 hour trip with marine biologists to see whales and dolphins. We were not disappointed!

Today i'm making some stowage covers for my Drascombe Lugger, Lulu! These are to fit the side stowage bins. On the lake I don't really have much in these, however when I start to cruise next year, I think they get get a bit fuller and these will, not only stop things falling out, but will also keep everything in the lockers should the worse happen! Oil spill cleanup activities can never remove all the oil spilled from the marine environment, and some methods may cause additional harm. In this activity, children will simulate an oil spill and use different methods and materials to try to clean up the pollution. May on the bay got off to a great start with a shakedown sail that proved Jonah to be in fine fettle. [02] We get a couple of days fishing in and catch two halibut and some lingcod. [03] Then a jaunt around the bay to visit Monterey and Moss Landing, before returning to Santa Cruz. [04] Day 1 - Start of the season shakedown day sail ----- [05] The season got off to a late start for Jonah, as her crew were detained too long by landlubber obligations. [06] But all of that was quickly forgotten as the wind filled her sails and the waves splashed her bows. [07] Oh yes, it is so very great to be back out at sea. [08] Plans are hatched before we return to lay course bound for more distant shores. Day 2 - Fishing! ----- [09] Our second excursion upon the briny was to be for a day of fishing. [10] The halibut are reportedly inshore now, and we'd be remiss if we didn't endeavor to land the big one. [11] Having arrived at the dock shortly after dawn, we were greeted by a magnificent clear sky. [12] Watching the sunrise on the water as we motor out to the fishing grounds, [13] sipping a cup of fresh brewed coffee. [14] As they say, it doesn't get any better than this. [15] Today I'm accompanied by my daughter and her friend Emelia and we spend a marvelous day fishing near Capitola. [16] We caught two good size halibut. Day 3 - Santa Cruz to Monterey ----- [17] Well, I arrived dockside at the good ship Jonah this morning to some troubling news. [18] Apparently, and according to a note left by the offender, someone had collided with my vessel last night! [19] upon reading this note, a somewhat frantic search ensued of her topsides for damage [20] but I could find no evidence of such whatsoever. Not even a scuff mark. [21] much relieved I decided to simply go about my day. [] OK then. Time to get down to the serious business of "Velocity Made Good" under Jonah's keel. [] Monterey is not that far away, and Jonah is determined to sail the entire distance. [] I acquiesce to her determination, and we press on canvas aplenty, at times, as usual, a little too much plenty. [25] As is our wont. [] We arrive in Monterey in good time and without issue.
