We thought we were ready. After clearing out of Malaysia in Labuan, we finally set sail west toward the Anambas Islands — with nine onboard: our family of four, five crew, and the dog. But before we could even leave, we discovered we’d picked up rats onboard. What started as a few nibbled food packets quickly became something we had to deal with before heading offshore. Rats on a boat aren’t just unpleasant — they’re a real safety and health concern, especially with kids onboard. Once the problem was dealt with, we set sail… and almost immediately ran into our first squall of the passage. In light but unsettled December conditions, the mainsail tore — and what followed were slow days at sea, stitching repairs underway, light winds, and the quiet rhythm of life onboard continuing regardless. This episode captures the in-between moments of a long passage — repairs underway, everyday life onboard with kids and crew, and all the small moments in between. The Anambas Islands are still ahead — and what’s coming next will test us more than we expected. Challenge Sailcloth's Super Premium fabrics are the highest yarn count, most densely woven sailcloth styles. The product line begins with Marblehead weaves. Both Low Aspect and High Aspect Marblehead constructions are made with Fiber 104, the very best polyester sailcloth yarn, in both the warp and fill directions of the cloth. Fiber 104 has Super Tenacity properties. Marblehead Weaves & Fiber 104 are woven with Power-Shrinkage technology. The yarns and fibers achieve their maximum shrinkage during processing, which means that the fibers are in their natural physical state before they are sewn into a sail and hoisted up the mast. The maximum shrinkage allows the yarns to be woven together more times per yard than any other fabric.This process is called Interlocking™. The fibers Interlock™ more times than other fabrics, resulting in a great mechanical advantage in sailcloth. The result is excellent bias stretch resistance, stability and durability. Marblehead Weaves use Fiber 104 in both the warp and fill direction of the construction. Fiber 104 is the highest shrinkage polyester yarn used in sailcloth. The Challenge R&D engineering team conducted a collaborative search with leading fiber manufacturers and textile engineers. The purpose of the search was to find the highest shrinkage, highest tenacity yarn. The search resulted in Fiber 104. The high shrinkage makes the highest yarn count, most densely woven fabrics, with the greatest quantity of fiber interlockings. There are many factors for community sailing centers and yacht clubs to consider before starting an adaptive sailing program or re-starting existing adaptive programming in a COVID-19 environment. A group of experienced adaptive sailing programmers will discuss these considerations LIVE on The Starboard Portal on Tuesday, June 23 at 2pm EDT / 11am PDT. The panel will share their plans for restarting programs for persons with disabilities in the current pandemic and there will be time for questions from the participating audience. They will also discuss the importance of getting persons with disabilities back on the water. Adaptive sailing for some people is the only sport they can participate and compete in totally on their own. The panel will address the challenges organizations face and how they are assessing, modifying, and mitigating sailing programs by changing procedures, policies, and approaches to sailing.
