We weighed anchor at Gilligan’s Island Anchorage around 8 AM despite some forecasted squalls. Once underway, the sea proved rougher than expected, and we encountered two powerful squalls with 40-knot winds and 2.2-meter waves. With the main sail double-reefed and only our stay sail up, we were surfing down waves at nearly 11 knots—a speed I hadn’t seen in Kaizen before. Navigating past Cabo Rojo Lighthouse in Puerto Rico, I had to hand-steer around the corner and adjust our course, running downwind instead of turning up at the island’s end due to the intense wind. It was an eventful day that truly put our sailing skills to the test!

Deveaux Bank is a horseshoe-shaped sand spit island encompassing a 215-acre (87-hectare) bird sanctuary at the mouth of the North Edisto River in Charleston County, South Carolina. It is located on the Atlantic Coast between Edisto Island, South Carolina and Seabrook Island, South Carolina. Its average elevation is three feet. It has approximately 2.75 miles (4.43 kilometres) of sandy beaches on three sides (some of which are completely submerged at high tide) and a tidal lagoon on the side facing the mainland. Deveaux bank was first documented in 1921 and by the 1930s was an established seabird rookery. During World War II, Deveaux Bank was used as a bombing range. The bank was completely submerged by Hurricane David in 1979 and tidal shifts that followed the next spring. Over the next several years the island continued to rebuild as sand was deposited by currents. Currents cause the shape of the island to constantly shift. Due to a lack of land predators, the island has become a heavily utilized bird nesting area. It is protected by the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources. Landings may only be done below the high-water line. Dogs are prohibited and overnight camping is also prohibited. Lähdimme siis liikkeelle Göteborgista (1) Trollhättan kanavaa pitkin kohti Vänern järveä ja yövyimme ensimmäisen yön Sikhallin (2) venesatamassa joka oli luonnollisesti kiinni vielä. WC oli sentäs auki. Siitä matka jatkui Vänernin läpi kohti Sjötorppia (3) josta Göta -kanava alkaa. Meillä oli loppujen lopuksi sitten Express lippu jolla pääsi kolmessa päivässä kavanav läpi. Jouduimme tosin odottelemaan kaksi päivää kanavaan pääsyä. Kanavalle pääsyn jälkeen ensimmäinen pysähdys oli Vätternin itärannalla Motalassa (4). Siellä olikin Hotelli/Ravintola jossa söimmekin aamiaisen ennen kanavalle lähtöä. Tullessamme satamaan ravintola oli jo menossa kiinni... Matka jatkui eteenpäin Göta -kanavassa kohti Norsholmia (5). Kanavan varrella saimmekin ensimmäisen ravintola illallisen, kunnon pihviä :) . Viimeinen etappi kanavalla alkoi perjantaina aamuna Sallasta kotoisen olevan Sakarin kanssa. Jokaisella kolmella etapilla oli siis henkilökohtainen sulkujen ja siltojen hoitaja. Ajeli autolla aina availemaan kun saavuimme paikalle. Göta -kanava päättyy Mem nimiseen kylään josta Itämeri alkaa. Jatkoimme samantien matkaa kohti Kökaria (6), etelä Ahvenenmaata. Olimme perillä lauantai iltana myöhään ja saimme tankattua dieseliä. Paikka oli muuten kiinni mutta pääsimme suihkuun ja vessaan. Sunnuntai aamuna klo 05 lähdimme eteenpäin kohti pohjoista ja saavuimme maanantaina klo 15 aikoihin kotisatamaan. ;elkoinen kokemus varmaan kaikille. Noin 625 nm koko matka kartalta laskettuna.
