Ο άνεμος είναι ίσως το σπουδαιότερο μετεωρολογικό φαινόμενο που επηρεάζει τις δραστηριότητές μας στη θάλασσα, καθώς ο άνεμος είναι αυτός που διαμορφώνει το ύψος των κυμάτων και τη γενικότερη κατάσταση της θάλασσας. Ο ατμοσφαιρικός αέρας μπορεί να κινηθεί με δύο τρόπους είτε οριζόντια είτε κατακόρυφα. Εξ’ ορισμού άνεμο ονομάζουμε την οριζόντια κίνηση του ατμοσφαιρικού αέρα. Οι κατακόρυφες κινήσεις του ατμοσφαιρικού αέρα είναι αυτές που διαμορφώνουν θα λέγαμε τις καιρικές συνθήκες σε μία περιοχή. Έτσι η ανοδική κίνηση είναι αυτή που συμβάλει στη δημιουργία νεφών και το αντίθετο η καθοδική κίνηση. Στο συγκεκριμένο βίντεο θα δούμε αναλυτικότερα την οριζόντια κίνηση του ατμοσφαιρικού αέρα. A sad day. Season 2 is over and it all feels so quick this year. So, with Mochyn Du already safely at home for the winter, I go back to Lake Bala to pick up Lulu. I take everything out of her and then make the silly decision to take her out in almost 40MPH winds!! I turn back quickly, get her back on her trailer and we go to the boat yard where her home will be for the winter. Hang around to the end as there's a nice montage pf the season to end the season off. I'll keep the videos coming over the winter as we have a lot of boat projects to do to get Lulu ready for next season. How do you organize your boat project list? What takes priority? Often the priority list shifts when disaster strikes. On our passage from Isla Mujeres to Miami, our gennaker halyard ruptured. Due to that rupture, we lost the halyard, all associated rigging, the sail, and the bowsprit. To add insult to injury we brought an entire new set of running rigging with us to Guatemala when we purchased the boat, so this was entirely avoidable. Our examination of the lines led us to make the choice to hold off on replacing them. That was an expensive mistake. Since then, we've decided the sails aren't going back up until every line has been replaced. IN THIS VIDEO: We're back in George Town, Exumas, The Bahamas after last being here two years ago. We meet up with old friends and make lots of new ones as we hike, raft, swim, and paddleboard. We gather a group and explore the 'lazy river', where the shifting tides create a floating paradise. We have yet another guest as Dennis' sister comes to stay for several days. While we did a lot of 'play', we also found ourselves with 'work' and figuring out two leaks. CURRENT LOCATION: https://forecast.predictwind.com/tracking/display/SV-GTFO/ ABOUT OUR CATAMARAN: We love our new Balance 482 - it's a perfect size for a cruising couple to handle and is a great "balance" of performance and comfort. One of our favorite features is the excellent ventilation since we mostly live as "hookers" (aka at anchor) where the boat automatically turns into the wind so we stay cool and we don't need to battle mold. We also have starlink for easy off-grid life. Our 2400 watt solar panel array also means we rarely need to run an engine to charge our batteries. ABOUT US: We saved for a our future boat, sold everything that we owned, and shipped the rest in a container to Cape Town, South Africa. We then flew there and explored South Africa by way of a safari and touring Cape Town before moving aboard our boat. We then sailed to Saint Helena, Ascension Island, Fernando de Naronha (Brazil), Martinique, Sint Maarten (Dutch and French side), the US Virgin Islands (Saint Croix, Saint John, and Saint Thomas), the British Virgin Islands (Anegada, Norman Island, Jost van Dyke, and Anegada), The Bahamas (Inagua, Crooked Island, Long Island, George Town, Staniel Cay, the Exumas, and Eleuthera). We then sailed back to the United States, making landfall in Cape Canaveral, Florida. From there our destinations are endless! Both Dennis and Ann grew up military brats with Army fathers. Dennis (the Colonel) served 30 years in the US Army and his retirement pension helped us retire in our 50s. Ann (the ship's Captain) wrote Test Automation in Python and Java. Dennis and Ann met on Match.com where Ann had in her profile "Do you want to sail the world with me?" Ann easily brought Dennis into sailing, and he loved the GTFOplan of retiring early and sailing the world. After many years of saving, living on one income but earning two, and cutting back on everything possible, they saved enough to buy a Balance 482. The Silver Bank Marine Sanctuary, just off the north coast of the Dominican Republic, provides a safe wintering haven for the entire North Atlantic Humpback Whale population who gather here from January through April. Three to five thousand humpbacks arrive here at the Silver Bank to court, mate, calve, and rear their young. Humpback whales find the area ideal for mating and giving birth as the banks offer safety and protection to females and their calves until the young are strong enough to make the trip back north. This sanctuary, also known as the “Sanctuary for the Marine Mammals of the Dominican Republic” is one of three places in the world where humans can swim and snorkel among the whales.
