This week we continue our ventures around the Isle of Arran. Lamlash is a village on the Isle of Arran, in the Firth of Clyde, Scotland. It lies 3 miles (5 km) to the south of ferry port Brodick, in a sheltered bay on the island's east coast, facing the Holy Isle. Lamlash is the seat of Arran's local government offices, and is also the location of the island's only police station, secondary school and hospital. In common with the rest of the island, the village's main industry is tourism and the public sector is also an important employer. Lamlash has an RNLI Lifeboat station with a B class Atlantic 75 lifeboat, covering the inshore waters around the coast of Arran, and in summer, there is a regular ferry service from Lamlash harbour to Holy Isle. The village has several buildings of historical interest, including Hamilton Terrace, which consists of two rows of idyllic single storey-and-attic cottages on the Lamlash seafront, arranged in pairs. The Isle of Arran is an island off the west coast of Scotland. It is the largest island in the Firth of Clyde and the seventh largest Scottish island, at 432 square kilometres. Who are we? We are a family of three with three dogs, sailing the coasts of Scotland, exploring one island at a time – for now! There is no set route or plan. We will go where the wind and life take us. We have two golden retrievers and a bernese mountain dog – Hachi, Luna and Meems who sail with us. We have a responsibility to protect these precious marine environments for future generations. This video focuses on mooring safely to minimise our impact. We often find ourselves mesmerized by the beauty above, but it's crucial to consider the underwater world when choosing an anchorage. Prioritise marked anchorages and available moorings. Avoid dropping anchor on seagrass or coral, as the damage can be irreversible. While not all seagrass meadows are mapped, careful observation can help identify these vital habitats. Join RYA Instructor Trystan as he demonstrates safe anchoring techniques that preserve Posidonia grass meadows. Here's what you can do: Enhance your underwater visibility by wearing polarised sunglasses. Anchor in sandy or muddy areas, avoiding seagrass meadows. Secure your boat to sturdy rocks, not trees or sand dunes, which protect the coastline. Return to the same anchoring spot whenever possible to minimize seabed disturbance. Prevent anchor drag by lifting and repositioning the anchor if necessary. Raise the anchor carefully by motoring towards it and cleaning it before leaving. If your anchor is stuck, attempt manual retrieval or mark the location for a diver. Avoid forceful maneuvers. This yacht, the Wajer Osprey 37, was designed by Vripack Design. She belonged to Wajer Yachts itself for the first year and was sold to the current owner in 2006. He always kept the yacht in its own beautiful covered berth, where it still lies today. This yachy has always been maintained and serviced by Wajer Yachts and that is why she is still beautiful and super neat. The opportunity to follow through - from sketches (perhaps grounded in childhood), to drawings, to reality - the design of that somehow most romantic of pleasure vessels, a traditionally inspired schooner yacht, must have been a great thrill for her designer, working with a commissioning owner up for some adventure. The idea was to carry her owning family to warmer waters in some style, without fuss and anxiety. Despite what Ed Burnett might have said below, perhaps when pressed about influences, AMELIA’s hull design is clearly a gentle evolution from the highly successful late 1990s 30 ft ZINNIA design created in partnership with Nigel Irens: a very good idea indeed. Great attention would, of course, have been applied to the special requirements of a schooner’s sail area distribution - to get the ‘drag’ in the keel profile just right. But in many ways, she’s simply a double size ZINNIA, which means that she feels much bigger than she is, sails like a dream, and rewards great pride in ownership. AMELIA has now ticked all the boxes for two owners. The first did indeed sail her down the Portuguese Trades to the warm waters of the Mediterranean where she was lightly used there until entering present ownership in 2010 when her home port moved north to Belgium. In current ownership, through much experience by use, AMELIA’s rig has been gradually and relatively subtly modernised/ optimsed for both performance and ease of short-handed sailing by a couple. While down below her accommodation has been delightfully transformed from New England style simplicity to the feel of a cosy Edwardian gentleman’s club. One can imagine spending a lot of time down there while reeling off the sea miles with aplomb.
