Sean Langman loves to champion the lesser-known designers and naval architects of yachting’s history. So the opportunity to restore the diminutive 30 foot 1950s sloop Kismet, designed by Illingworth and Penrose was one not to miss. Captain John Illingworth is well known to Australians as the first winner of the Sydney Hobart yacht race in 1945 and he also collaborated in many of his yacht designs with Angus Primrose (co-designer of Sir Francis Chichester’s Gipsy Moth IV) But Kismet was a collaboration between Illingworth and Harald Penrose, a test pilot and naval architect. Some of the stories of Harald’s 25 years as a test pilot are hair-raising, but it was his deep knowledge of lightweight aeronautical design that he brought to the design of Kismet. We spoke to Sean about the restoration of Kismet and his two-handing venture with friend and experienced offshore racer Peter Inchbold.

Peter Gibbons-Neff returns to the podcast to talk about the successes and failures of his Mini-Transat racing campaign. "PGN" and I sat down face-to-face in Annapolis where he told me about losing a rudder shortly after the start in the Canaries, the hardest part about solo sailing a 16-ft. boat, how the mini-class doesn't allow even basic electronics, his military background and how that helps him offshore — plus his plans to one day win the Mini-Transat! -- ON THE WIND is presented by Forbes Yachts, the yacht sales professionals. A Massive Storm Caught Us Off Guard ⚡️🌊 We set out to visit Makatea Island, but huge waves forced us to change course, sailing an extra day to the nearest safe anchorage. Just as we started to relax, a terrifying lightning storm rolled in, passing directly over us! The thunder was deafening, the sky turned white with flashes, and our biggest fear? One direct strike could fry our electronics—or worse. 😨 To make things even more intense, our friends were out in a kayak when the storm hit, disappearing into the chaos. With visibility near zero and the wind picking up, we dragged anchor and had to fight to keep our boat in position. Other sailors in this atoll were struck by lightning just months ago, so we knew the risks were real. Once the storm cleared, we scrambled to check on our friends, reconnect with nearby boats, and prepare for an exciting moment—Brioni’s parents finally arrived! After years apart, emotions were running high, and we couldn’t wait to welcome them aboard. 👉 Join us for this wild ride through the unexpected challenges and joys of full-time sailing in French Polynesia! 📍 Where we are: The remote Tuamotu Atolls, French Polynesia ⚡ Weather conditions: Extreme lightning storm, high winds ⛵ Boat challenges: Dragging anchor, emergency positioning 👨👩👧 Family reunion: Brioni’s parents arrive! 🔔 Subscribe for more real-life sailing adventures: https://www.youtube.com/@UCV66mGJJSsDNiljtm6Ur0cw #sailing #storm #lightning #FrenchPolynesia #Tuamotus #sailboatlife #adventure #oceanlife #liveaboard #travelvlog - - - - - - - - - - - - - 🙌🏻 Support us 🙌🏻 PATREON: www.patreon.com/redseas TIPJAR: www.tpjr.us/redseas NEW MERCH STORE: www.red-seas.com/shop For more information about Zora, check out www.iNav4U.com DISCOUNT CODE: REDSEAS See version 1 (Wayfinder) in action here: https://youtu.be/jQanLnmrHBw 💬 Follow us on social media 💬 FACEBOOK: www.facebook.com/realredseas INSTAGRAM: www.instagram.com/realredseas ⏰ Time Stamps ⏰ 00:00 Our boat isn't safe 01:01 Forced to leave this island 02:33 Changing our perspective 04:03 Sailing too fast 08:03 It's time to go 10:56 Our worst nightmare 13:57 Dragging anchor 16:40 Rescue mission 18:49 Family reunion 🎵 Music 🎵 All tracks can be found at Epidemic Sound. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - 📖 Our Story 📖 We're Iain and Brioni [The Reds] a couple of redheaded Scots who sold everything we own and moved halfway round the world to buy a boat that we could call home. Five 60 Second MIPS Strategies - Day 2
AQUON One is a zero-emissions yacht. The sustainable catamaran generates and stores its own renewable energy. It is powered by silent electric engines and allows more independence in cruising. This video explains the ship's eco-propulsion and energy system: AQUON One is a solar ship which produces renewable energy via photovoltaic cells. By means of electrolysis, energy and water are turned into green hydrogen as energy carrier / green hydrogen fuel. The hydrogen is reconverted into electricity through fuel cells, powering the silent electric engines and other electricity needs on board. This allows AQUON One to be energetically self-sufficient for several days. The hull and design of the catamaran are optimized for efficiency. As hydrogen is much lighter than diesel fuel or batteries, the constant weight of the yacht further enhances efficiency. The only exhaust of the energy process is pure and clean water vapour. This, in turn, gets used on board, and it eliminates diesel fumes or loud engine noises. AQUON One showcases Swiss innovation and redefines independent and sustainable yachting.
