Days of relentless rain. No sun for our solar panels. Batteries drained to nearly zero. And the tail end of Hurricane Beryl still swirling around us in the Thousand Islands. With no shore power and limited options, we found ourselves on the edge—until a kind fellow cruiser offered us their generator and reminded us what the sailing community is all about. Full-time cruising isn’t always sunshine and sandy beaches. Sometimes, it’s damp clothes, dead batteries, and leaning on the kindness of strangers. Come aboard for a raw and real week of liveaboard life. 🌧⚡⛵ #sailing #boatlife #cruisingfamily #thousandislands #offgrid #livaboardlife 👉 Support the journey: https://www.patreon.com/turtlecrossingsailing 🛟 Grab some merch: www.turtlecrossing.ca 🎵 Music by Epidemic Sound
Sailing through remote Japan has been nothing short of magical. Apart from the new icy sea air and misty mornings, we’ve loved undertaking short passages between the many rural fishing villages. Watching our boys discover a new culture, and making friends along the way, has made this chapter even more special for Riles and I 💙 Have you caught up on our full adventure Sailing Japan series yet? I’ll link it if you haven’t, you don’t want to miss it! xx

After a great couple of days at Eddy Reef we seek shelter from a blow in the protection of Mourilyan Harbour. We do some crabbing and walks, before sailing north and doing some hot fishing en route to the beautiful High Island. This is the first episode of 2025 and a chance to begin again on the story of John and the old Newport 28 sailboat that he lives on. In this episode, John's good friend, Kevin @fromthewildca comes to visit while Mary is away in Colorado. Red Rock Crab, right off the dock, are on the menu as well as a minor repair the sailboat's wood stove. After a summer of big changes and many adjustments, life is settled to the point where the videos can continue. The plan is to release between 12 and 20 episodes this year. This will be an archive of the adventures that John and Mary enjoy this year. There are plans for fly fishing trips and backcountry camping as well as the out-of-the-ordinary lifestyle of simply living on a sailboat on the Pacific Ocean. The plan still exists for John to sail to Scotland to meet up with Mary to get married, but for now, we need to focus on saving money for the bigger boat along with all of the other adventurous plans we have in mind. This year, we'll be learning to sail around the southern Gulf Islands along with a few other trips, like the Yukon to fly fish for Grayling! Don't worry, Mary will be appearing in episodes beginning February! We live full-time on a sailboat in Alaska, and every once in a while, we leave the boat in search of something new… This time, we had our dear friend Atz Kilcher aboard. After months of work in Port Protection, Alaska, we were excited to explore more of the Inside Passage in Southeast, Alaska, and finally go to the remote hot spring only accessible by boat or float plane. What we thought would be a simple soak turned into a full-on Alaska adventure....snow, rain, slippery trails, and more than a few moments where we questioned our decisions. And when we finally made it? Let’s just say… it wasn’t exactly what we expected. 📍 Warm Springs Bay, Alaska ⛵ Life aboard our sailboat, one wild day at a time ⏱ CHAPTERS 00:00 Leaving the boat for a “simple” plan 00:30 Heading to Warm Springs Bay 01:30 First look at the trail 02:15 Bathhouse… but we keep going 03:00 Searching for the real springs 04:30 Trail turns sketchy 08:00 Slippery boardwalk chaos 10:00 This gets dangerous 13:00 Creek crossings & confusion 15:00 “Path of hell” moment 17:30 We finally see it 18:40 Reaching the hot springs 20:40 First reactions… 25:20 Not what we expected 26:30 The trek back 30:00 Trail philosophy kicks in 33:00 Surviving the way out 35:00 Ending at the bathhouse
We’ve been living this life for 7 years now… Sailing, travelling, exploring — it looks like a dream. But behind the scenes, there are parts no one really talks about. In this episode, we open up about one of the hardest challenges we’ve faced as a family — something that made us stop and question everything. Because when you choose a different path… it doesn’t just affect you. ⛵ From the UK to life on board Holly Blue 🌍 Years of travel, freedom, and unforgettable moments 💬 But also the realities of raising kids in a constantly changing world This is a more honest look at boat life — the parts that don’t always make it into the highlight reel. 🎓 This episode is supported by Minerva Virtual Academy One of the biggest turning points for us was finding the right structure for our kids’ education while living this lifestyle. Minerva Virtual Academy has been a huge part of that — providing: ✔ A flexible, fully online British curriculum ✔ Consistent education no matter where we are in the world ✔ Structure and routine that we realised our kids really needed If you’re living abroad, travelling, or simply looking for a different approach to schooling, it’s well worth a look. 👉 Learn more here: https://www.minervavirtual.com/?utm_source=youtube&utm_medium=youtube&utm_campaign=sailinghollyblue If this episode resonates with you, or you’ve faced something similar, we’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments. 👍 Like & subscribe to follow our journey 🔔 New episodes every month.
