Hello Friends, This is the long format episode that chronicles my 32 day, 2300 nm passage from Los Angeles to Honolulu onboard my 1965 Alberg 30 sailboat SV TRITEIA. 1000 miles from Hawaii my rudder failed due to striking a submerged object (that was painted red). After failed attempts to secure the control lines to the rudder due to large seas and high winds I was forced to steer with a small "Sea Squid" drogue for 18 days. Triteia is equipped with a vintage Sailomat Aux Rudder wind vane which helped a great deal but was far undersized compared to the large rudder attached to Triteia’s full keel. The Windvane started to fail internally soon after the rudder failure. I was able to make a makeshift tiller handle that allowed me to turn the boat to get it back on course but the self steering started popping out of gear and stopped working completely while I crossed the channel between Molokai and Oahu forcing me to sit on the transom and hand steer for the last 6 hours of this intense passage. I hold Noah’s opinion as gospel and he has saved my ass on the last two passages. He is the one I bug when I am terrified. We begin the day catching small live bait in return for big deep sea fish. After that we venture out to the Islamorada hump to live bait chum mahi-mahi and blackfin tuna to the surface. Thereafter we fill the box with more than enough tuna and dolphin which we the decided to make a move to try and deep drop for grouper. After a couple drops we eventually acquired a catch and we decided to make the long run home. Upon our arrival back towards shore we were greeted with the crystal clear aqua blue water that lines the Florida Keys. I couldn’t resist getting in the water as we were running over one of my lobster spots. Therefore I hopped in grabbed two lobsters, one for me one for Stephanie and then finally made it home. After arrival we show you guys how to clean a lobster and mahi-mahi and then, take it upstairs to Stephanie as she shows us how to prepare a beautiful fish piccata meal.

Having zero knowledge or experience with sailing, or even how to furl in the head sail, we bought a yacht in Italy.. we plan to circumnavigate the globe eventually, or just get the boat back to Australia. Documenting the voyage as we go. Turns out sailing isn't always as relaxing or easy as it looks and we are forever learning new things (seems to be not always the easy way).. We set sail on an ocean passage from Mazatlan, Mexico to Nuku Hiva in the Marquesas Islands. Sailing across an ocean has been a long-held dream for us, but we were not planning on extending this cruise so far from home. But, we realized that if we were serious about bluewater cruising, the time was right. We decided to take the leap and sail 2800 nautical miles across the open ocean, reaching the fabled south sea islands. Cruising the South Pacific is on the bucket list for any sailor, and completing this passage has been one of the most rewarding experiences we have ever done. We left Mazatlan on March 23rd, and arrived at Nuku Hiva on April 16th, totalling 24 days and 9 hours at sea. We covered around 2900 nautical miles, used less than half our water and a fourth of our fuel. We motored 35 hours and each of us stood 73 four hour watches. Julia is an Ingrid Ketch, designed by William Atkin and built in 1960. She is a traditional wooden boat, built of doug fir planking on oak frames. The length on deck is 37.5 ft and the waterline is 30 ft. She handled the open ocean brilliantly, it was obvious that this was exactly the type of sailing she was built for. Sometimes it is hard to imagine that this was just a couple of months ago. Draken and her crew have been through storms on the North Atlantic Ocean. What an achievement, sailing from Norway, to Shetland Islands, Faroe Islands, Iceland, Greenland, Newfoundland - just like the Vikings did a 1000 years ago, and into the St Lawrence Seaway, trough the locks and into the Great Lakes. She made it, it is a real modern Viking voyage.

Yep, La Vagabonde reached 22.7 knots boat speed. We couldn’t believe it. With a max of 28 knots wind behind us from about 120 degrees, we surfed down one wave and then caught the next one in front of that. Before we knew it we were all looking at a 22.7 on the nav gear. I had a close eye on the bows making sure they weren't going to bury, they looked like they might but Riley "promised" me that it was normal and fine!! Matthieu says we could have got 25 knots so looks like Riley will be aiming for that next time… I never thought I’d go this fast on a sail boat. Still in recovery from this wild experience. Very happy to still be here to tell you this tale, to be alive and writing this very description is a miracle. I love you guys, Elayna. Sailing 1,500 miles from Cocos Keeling we make landfall in the remote, exotic paradise that is CHAGOS!!! We discover a wrecked catamaran on the beach and have some wicked-cool walks in the jungle where we discover all sorts of cool native wildlife including massive coconut crabs.
