Episode 256 We set sail from Sydney in some tasty conditions, with long rolling seas picking us up and sending our little catamaran surfing at speeds touching 10 knots. After a full day riding that energy up the coast, we reach Newcastle and tuck into the harbour for the night. Later in the episode, we get an unexpected invite to jump aboard a tug and join the crew as they pull a coal ship off the harbour wall. We help manoeuvre the vessel back out to sea, meet the team, explore the engine room, and get a rare look at life on a working tug. https://Rocna.com https://www.facpebook.com/share/1AE2Z2xjCz/ #Rocnaanchors SailorsBay Check out this App http://www.sailorsbay.app/ Thank you to all our subscribers, without you the channel would not exist! SKAL, second only to DORADE in the 1931 Transat Race never received the accolades conferred upon the winner. In so many ways however SKAL was the remarkable contender... https://www.sandemanyachtcompany.co.uk/yacht/651/SKAL ... considering she was the smallest among the fleet of ten, had an old fashioned gaff rig, and a poor handicap rating. Racing apart - and she has won some over the years - she is a versatile and comfortable yacht; well rigged and equipped for cruising, and has proved to be a dry boat whatever the weather. Enjoying a substantial restoration, and re conversion to a lighter and more manageable bermudan rig, SKAL is now a finely tuned sailing yacht with a beautifully enhanced interior fit-out offering generous accommodation with modern systems sympathetically installed.

WOW! Catching SQUID with NO LURE on sailing catamaran - Ep 106 If you'd like to support us creating these videos keeping us afloat see our Patreon page: https://www.patreon.com/CruisingKiwis We are sailing off shore, off grid to Black Reef on The Great Barrier Reef. Normally a squid jig is used to catch squid but lacking the right lure we developed a technique that worked just as well for us. Then we cleaned, cooked and shared them with our friends. We also completed several stunning dives while in the incredibly calm waters of the reef. And a we have a return visit from one of our Black Noddy Tern friends. Our thanks to Barry and Kim Boswell (Jadean), and Richard and Kim Dakins (Libeccio) for additional photography. What a time we had together! Music Brooke Annibale - Feels like home instrumental - Musicbed.com Luna Keller - I don't know where I'm going Brooke Annibale - Feels Like home David Mumford - Ball and chain BACK STORY In 1997, after rowing at the Atlanta Olympics, Rob decided to row a tiny seven-metre plywood boat, 2500 miles from Tenerife in the Canary Islands to Barbados in the Caribbean. It took 6 weeks and he and his rowing partner, Phil Stubbs, won the inaugural Atlantic Rowing Race. His first taste of a blue water ocean crossing. Skip forward to 2014 and, married with three children, Rob and Rachel purchased Javelot a 43 ft Fountaine Pajot catamaran. Armed only with Rob's 3 years of racing P class yachts from the age of 11 to 13, and Rachel's non existent sailing knowledge, we set off to learn the ropes of ocean sailing. We broke stuff, replaced stuff and got to know our boat before heading offshore with the kids, Finn 18, Declan 16 and Ivan 13, in tow. Through trial and error, we have become confident wayfarers, kind of. Our plan? To sail around the world. Part of the journey will be retracing Rob’s eldest brother Kerry’s travels at sea. Using Kerry’s original letters from the 1970’s we will re trace his movements from Australia through Indonesia and South East Asia to Cambodia where Kerry’s life was cut short after straying into Cambodian waters in 1978. Kerry and two friends were attacked by a Khmer Rouge gun boat, captured, tortured and executed. www.brothernumberone.co.nz ***** Follow us in real time on Instagram and Facebook @thecruisingkiwis @finn_hamill @declan_hamill @ivanhamill #NeverStopWanderingNeverStopWondering. #TheCruisingKiwis
