Purely an introduction to beach launching this video illustrates the types of beach that present themselves and how to identify them. The idea is to watch this one in conjunction with the other videos in this playlist.
This is launching at its easiest. The boat can be rigged easily bow to wind, these type of beaches often have little waves and you simply sail out and back. No beating or running, just reaching required. This video will still provide the useful info you need to identify such a beach and then show you how to deal with the situation
Launching in an Offshore wind appears to be the easiest and safest as the beach is often very sheltered. Whilst this may be the case, you MUST be aware of what the wind is doing away form the beach. This video will help you to identify what to do when launching with the wind blowing away from the beach
This video shows some of the common mistakes we have come across that folk make. Hopefully by watching this video you will be able to identify some of the situations and know what to do
This type of beach launching is the most common. Sea breeze effect of the land heating up more often than not creates the breeze to blow onto the shore from the sea. This usually creates waves which can present a hazard. Coupled with the fact that the wind will try to blow you back ashore makes this the hardest beach to sail away from. This video shows you how to identify the beach and what to do to sail out correctly.
This is an introduction to coming back ashore.
Sailing ashore is a key skill to learn. Onshore winds are the most common environment you will probably come across if you are sea sailing. Here we take you through the key steps
cross shore wind is when the wind blows up or down the beach. This is the easiest beach to approach but there are key steps you need to understand. Watch the video to understand what these are
This how to sail video will show you how to come back to shore when the wind is blowing offshore. In other words when you have to sail upwind to reach the beach. Learning to sail to get back in is an important skill to learn
This how to sail video will show you How to come back ashore. This is a key thing to learn to sail. Get it wrong and you could be in trouble. This video shows the common mistakes that we often see.
Taking a boat out for the first time is exciting. What do I do, and where do I sit and what do I do with all the ropes. This is an introduction to what you should aim for on your first sail. Watch this in conjunction with the other videos in this playlist and return to watch them over again if you need to.
Recap of the things you should aim to do on your first sail. This is how to start and stop, and how to turn around. Simple things to start with allow you to become familiar with how the boat behaves and responds to your control
After teaching people for many years there are common mistakes that apply to large numbers of people. All of our common mistake videos follow this principle and this one looks at the mistakes often made on your first sail
Here is a couple of simple maneouvres to practice on your first sail. Good exercises to practice boat control
Turning around on your first sail should be a tack which is where the bow of the boat turns through the wind. For a more detailed explanation of this process please watch the playlist on tacking. This video is the lowest common denominator for taking. Follow the instructions to understand how to turn in its simplest form, but remember that this is a complex process with more information needed.
This online sailing lesson introduces you to the sails, and how to use them. As this is your first day out these are the most simple but easiest to understand. It is all about the sail not flapping...... I hate that term, but it explains what you need the sail to do. Release the control lines until the sail flaps or flutters and then pull them in until they just stop flapping,
Where to sit is important. This video will show you, and help you to identify where this is. Good crewing position is a key skill to learn.

The final race of the Gunboat Class at St Maarten Heineken Regatta 2014
www.divingadelaide.com.au www.onlinedivegear.com.au The wreck of the Norma is now well over 100 years old. It sank after it was hit by the barque Ardencraig, who misjudged the distance between the two ships due to extremely heavy rains. Right after the two collided and the Norma sank (within about 15 minutes), the Jessie Darling came to the rescue, which hit the at that point very shallow wreck of the Norma and also sank. The Jessie Darling was later re-floated and repaired. The incident with the Jessie Darling made the authorities decide to dynamite the site, to limit the risks of this massive wreck in the shipping lane. Because of this, the wreck site is very spread out. It took us well over 30 minutes to circumvent the whole site. There is an amazing amount of fish life on the wreck, mostly bullseyes, but also heaps of whiting and other schools of fish. You can clearly identify big parts of the ship. I've heard from different sources that there is a wobbegong shark living in the bow of the ship, but the three times that I have dived it I have never found it. As you can see in the video, there is a marker/plaque in the middle of the wreck site, that tells the story of the Norma. This dive site is usually quite murky, so we were very happy with the 10 metres visibility that we had when we dived it. There wasn't much current and the water temperature was about 22 degrees Celsius.
