Olympic gold medallists Nathan Outteridge and Iain Jensen took away a bronze medal in the 49er – Men’s Skiff class in the tightest battle of the day on the final day of the Santander 2014 ISAF World Sailing Championships. Jason Waterhouse and Lisa Darmanin won the first World Championship medal for Australia in the Nacra17, which will be new on the 2016 Olympic program, adding another bronze to the Australian medal tally. Nina Curtis and Darren Bundock finished 9th. The 49er and Nacra 17 world titles were snapped up with a day to spare at the Santander 2014 ISAF Sailing World Championships as the final Medal Race spots were decided in the remaining four classes competing. Peter Burling and Blair Tuke (NZL), in the 49er, and Billy Besson and Marie Riou (FRA), in the Nacra 17, both took their second consecutive world title after dominant displays in Santander. Mat Belcher & Will Ryan won the gold medal in the 470 class and Tom Burton silver in the Laser class at the 2014 ISAF Sailing World Championships. Belcher & Ryan defended their ISAF Sailing World Championship crown in the Men’s 470 on the penultimate day of the regatta (Saturday, 20 September). This marks the fifth World Champ title for Mat Belcher and the second for Will Ryan. It was Australia’s second medal at these World Championships after Tom Burton (NSW) claimed Australia’s first medal of the ISAF Sailing World Championships – a silver in the Laser class. Belcher and Ryan as well as Burton qualified the Men’s 470 and the Laser classes for Australia for a spot at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. Shosholoza means "to move forward." It is also the title of South Africa's unofficial national anthem. By naming its boat Shosholoza and manning it with a mixed race crew, sponsor T-Systems captured the new spirit of South Africa through the drama and excitement of a 2007 America's Cup Challenge. Behind the scenes is the Izivunguvungu Sailing School, a non-profit founded in 1997 by SA Olympic sailor Ian Ainslie. The school teaches Cape Town's disadvantaged youth and street children life skills through sail training. Part of the MSC Foundation, the school's key benefactor is Captain Salvatore Sarno who also serves as the Managing Director of Team Shosholoza. Assisting with the youth sailing program is the South African Navy. Together, their efforts are changing the lives of the poorest of South Africa's children: instilling pride through the discipline of sailing and national identity through positive role models, black and white, crewing aboard Team Shosholoza. Bowman, Golden Mgedeza and other Team Shosholoza crew members became new heroes for children who are turning away from crime, returning to school, and embracing sailing as a way to give new meaning to their lives.

Austria’s Lara Vadlau and Jolanta Ogar and Australia’s Mat Belcher and Will Ryan stormed to gold in the Men’s and Women’s 470 as a capacity crowd watched the action unfold at the Santander 2014 ISAF Sailing World Championships. The spectator Dune was packed with 2,500 to 3,000 sailing fans who watched Vadlau and Ogar claim their first world title and Belcher and Ryan claim their second together. The victory was special for Belcher as he made it five 470 world titles in a row.
