Show 63 -- "Tonga Pt. 1" Latitudes & Attitudes casts off on a Share the Sail from The Moorings base in the exotic Kingdom of Tonga, the only South Pacific island nation never ruled by Europeans. In part one, the crews explore the main island of Tongatapu then sail to the remote island group of Vava'u. Next, at the Annapolis Sailboat Show, Bob checks out Colligo Marine's innovative line of synthetic standing rigging that's stronger than conventional steel wire. We round out the episode with the weekly "Sailing Made Easy" tip by the American Sailing Association, a "Rules of the Road Q&A" from the Marine Institute, "Underway" photos from our viewers, and "Bob's Attitudes".

I'm asking for your support to help get the Serious Sailing, Serious Fun: Traditions Build Winners documentary edited this year, the 80th Anniversary of the Snipe. You can donate money for this project on-line at Kickstarter.com and at the same time you can be entering the raffle I'm holding. My Kickstarter project is titled "Traditions Build Winners as the Snipe turns 80". Here's the url: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1719722064/traditions-build-winners-as-the-snipe-class-turns Kickstarter.com let's everyone donate to the project, no matter what you can afford. If your donation is $25, it is just as valuable to reaching the goal of $7,500 as one of $500. Every donation counts. There are rewards at each level of participation that are outlined on the Kickstarter page. Please dig deep and help us complete the project. Here's how the raffle works. Between now and April 15 (For those in the US, that's tax day), anyone who donates $250 will be entered in the drawing for Jerry's boat. If you donate $500 you get two entries. $2,500 get's you 10 entries. We only give away the boat if we reach the $7,500 Kickstarter threshold and I don't get any money if we don't reach our goal. The Jerry's boat is in sail away condition at the Alamitos Bay Yacht Club in Long Beach California. You can pick it up there, or we'll help you get it to somewhere else, but it's FOB at the club. It does not come with a trailer.

Edson Marine has developed a revolutionary new wheel with clutch and brake. For sailing yachts with autopilots, the helmsman can clutch out the wheel, removing its fly wheel effect, dramatically decreasing the load on the autopilot. This is especially useful on yachts with dual wheel systems. The wheel also includes a traditional brake to lock the steering system. See www.edsonmarine.com Watch more sailing videos at www.thesailingchannel.tv Shot with a Canon D5 Mark II with 24-80mm lens and a Sennheiser shoe mounted shotgun mic. Edited with Final Cut Pro 7 HD.

Buzz started sailing young wit his brother Frank. They sort of fell into the Snipe by accident but clearly they liked it. Pretty soon the whole family was sailing Snipes and winning championships. He liked the boat because it was easy to handle and he could have a girl crew for him -- girls being smaller and more agile in the boat. That's always an important part of having Serious Fun to go along with the Serious Sailing. Buzz sailed with Dick Tillman down in South America and he's got a great story about Dick's choice of foul weather gear.

Siri Kamfjord has only been sailing Snipes for two years but she knows that sailing the Snipe Women's Worlds in November in St. Petersburg is a whole lot warmer than staying in Norway. She sails with her cousin and was hoping the big fleet and light breeze wouldn't be too big a change from Norway where she has los of fun sailing in big breezes.

Ida Satersdal started sailing Snipes in 2000 and she's already been to two Women's World Championships. She had a Snipe fleet in her town in Norway and a skipper that kept asking her to come out and catch a ride. That's a perfect way to be introduced. Even though Ida learned to sail in big boats, for her the Snipe defines sailing -- both its complexity and its easy to pick up skills. She talks about how its not just about learning the mechanics of sail shape and boat handling, but all the other skills that need to be mastered too -- like reading the wind and weather patterns and of course tactics. Coming to Florida in November for the 2010 Snipe Women's World Championship sounded like a wonderful idea.
