If you have refrigeration on your boat you can use Ice making during the day, when you will have solar power to reduce the load on your ships batteries. Storing energy as ice to keep your ice box cold over night will reduce the power drain on the batteries This means they will last longer and/or you can have less battery capacity on board. I describe two methods I use on board to reduce the power consumption over night.

In 2009 nam ik deel aan onze eerste Sardine Run expeditie. We kregen toen een gigantische bait ball op het bord met alles erop en eraan. Het smaakte naar meer! Nu 7 jaar later gaan de gesprekken nog vaak over deze unieke ervaring. Beelden van enorme scholen sardienen, jagende dolfijen, meer dan 20 meter diep duikende vogels en walvissen die vlak naast jou uit het water komen gedoken en terug verdwijnen... Het is bijna onmogelijk om de intensiteit van dergelijk spektakel te evenaren! Sinds 2012 zakken we jaarlijks af naar de "Wild Coast" in Zuid-Afrika om ons geluk te beproeven. Hoewel de kers op de taart vaak ontbrak, werden de deelnemers telkens opnieuw overweldigd door het avontuur en de ongelofelijke natuur-ervaringen. De spanning van de zoektocht, de adrenaline, ... iedereen genoot met volle teugen. Naast de "gewone" ontmoetingen met bultruggen, dolfijnen en haaien, gaan we uiteraard elke keer opnieuw wél voor de kers op de taart! BAIT BALL!!!!! Belangrijk bij een deelname aan dergelijke expeditie is het besef dat Sardine Run niet alleen om bait balls draait. Zelfs indien de sardienen forfait geven, zijn alle bijhorende predators (jagers) in de buurt. Bij afwezigheid van bait balls verleggen wij de focus van deze reis dan ook onmiddellijk naar een "wildlife experience". Zo werd er in het verleden ook gedoken met mola mola, en genoot iedereen van unieke momenten onder water met Bultrug walvissen, haaien en dolfijnen! We motor-sailed from San Diego, California to the San Francisco Bay area. 10 days, 111 hours at sea and 470 nautical miles. The uphill battle against wind and currents, sailing north on the west coast is no pleasure cruise. Annapolis Yacht Club August 5th. Another great night on the Servern and Chesapeake. Starts from PHRF to the J 105s. Racing with the Harbor 20's, Hereshoff 12.5s, and a duel to the finish with the J 70's.

With less than 24h between 2 international flights, I decided to have a quick look at the city center of Sydney. I took a bus ride as well as explored Chinatown and underground market. Luckily for me, this happened during the famous Vivid 2015, the annual festival of lights in Sydney.. Great timing! Filmed quickly with a GoPro on the fly in May 2015.
