We divert to a new country to make repairs on our sailboat, but will the grant us entry? You won't believe what we see when we arrive to this unplanned location! #sailing #sailingaroundtheworld #brazil After three weeks at sea it nips at our nerves that we have so much uncertainty about what the future holds. But we are well prepared with enough food, water, and fuel to carry on to the next place if we have to! The port we find to enter is not a normal one for small yachts to enter the country, and our research on Brazil hasn't told us too much since we originally did not intend to come here... See what happens when we finally make landfall! So who is this crazy sailing couple making fun videos to share? Well, we are Kate and Curtis. We both sold up and headed out to sea, with the goal of sailing around the world via Cape Horn and the Cape of Good Hope. We brought our mixed rescue dog along with us as she loves sailing and swimming too! Our boat is a year 2000 J Boats J/46. We searched for 3 years for our perfect sailboat for sale, when we found it, we knew it was the one. We spent 6 months re-fitting it in Rhode Island and then went for our shakedown voyage in Maine. We stopped in Annapolis for a bit to do some more refit work and offshore modifications, then we set off to the open sea. We went to the Bahamas, Miami, US Virgin Islands, BVI, Grenada, Carriacou, St. Maarten, where we enjoyed outdoor adventures, scuba diving, and have now did an Atlantic Crossing to the Azores where we had a chance to fly our DJI drone (and learned how to fly a drone from a boat) and one of our favorite past times, mountain biking. After leaving the Azores we sailed to Tenerife. From there we have left on a huge voyage, transatlantic again, this time to South America as we head for our goal of rounding cape horn to enter the pacific ocean. Michel Nivelt was indeed one of the two partners of the La Prairie shipyard - the boatbuilder that launched this catamaran in sprayed polyester and plywood, one of the very first of its kind. While the standard model was equipped with a folding deck enabling it to be transported, its little sibling, the Junior, was content with a much more rigid one-piece plywood deck. This is where Olivier Quaneaux, one of our readers, comes in: he got in touch with us; he contacted us because he had unearthed this little catamaran, carefully restored (in his garage...). But what was he proposing? To let us discover for ourselves this surviving piece of history, at the sailing club - the Club de Voile de Castelnaudary, here in France. With its original sails, this Exocet Junior of course thrilled us. Hier in der Karibik bedeutet nahezu jeder etwas längere Törn, dass Ländergrenzen überschritten werden. Die Sicher Reisen APP des Auswärtigen Amtes informiert aktuell über alle Voraussetzungen und Einreisebestimmungen des jeweiligen Landes und verlinkt auf entsprechende nationale Seiten. In Corona-Zeiten ein absolutes Muss. Marine Traffic zeigt nicht nur, wo sich befreundete Yachten aktuell aufhalten, wo viele Yachten und wo wenige Yachten sind. Mit Marine Traffic messen wir die Entfernung zum Ziel, um unter Annahme einer Durchschnittsgeschwindigkeit die Reisezeit zu kalkulieren. Da wir gerne bei Tageslicht im Zielgebiet ankommen, kann bei mehrtägigen Törns der Abfahrtszeitpunkt bestimmt werden. Auch über die App Vessel Finder können alle Yachten lokalisiert werden, die ein AIS-Signal aussenden. Marine Traffic sowie Vessel Finder sind kostenlose Apps privater Anbieter. Leider sind sie deshalb lückenhaft, wie z.B. hier im Norden der British Virgin Islands. Windy gibt Auskunft über Windstärken, Böen und Wellenhöhen in dem zu befahrenden Seegebiet. Obwohl dies 9 Tage im Voraus erfolgt, sollte einem immer bewusst sein, dass die zugrunde liegenden Wettermodelle eine einigermaßen seriöse Vorhersage maximal 5 Tage im Voraus errechnen können. The water changes color as we close in and sadly bypass the large city of Rio de Janeiro. Our boat dog, Roxy, finally get's some sniffs of land, but is it just a teaser? Finally, we spot a protected cove and the draw of a full night of sleep no longer offshore changing shifts is so ever tempting, so we launch the drone and inspect. We both sold up and headed out to sea, with the goal of sailing around the world via Cape Horn and the Cape of Good Hope. We brought our mixed rescue dog along with us as she loves sailing and swimming too! Our boat is a year 2000 J Boats J/46. We searched for 3 years for our perfect sailboat for sale, when we found it, we knew it was the one. We spent 6 months re-fitting it in Rhode Island and then went for our shakedown voyage in Maine. We stopped in Annapolis for a bit to do some more refit work and offshore modifications, then we set off to the open sea. We went to the Bahamas, Miami, US Virgin Islands, BVI, Grenada, Carriacou, St. Maarten, where we enjoyed outdoor adventures, scuba diving, and have now did an Atlantic Crossing to the Azores where we had a chance to fly our DJI drone (and learned how to fly a drone from a boat) and one of our favorite past times, mountain biking. After leaving the Azores we sailed to Tenerife. From there we have left on a huge voyage, transatlantic again, this time to South America as we head for our goal of rounding cape horn to enter the pacific ocean.
