Where else can you simply walk in from the beach, swim out for a bit and dive a 125 year old historical shipwreck like the Star of Greece! After hearing so much about it, Brett, Denise and Ron went out for a very long dive on the wreck and the reef right next to it. The reef gets down to about 8 metres and is not a bad dive by itself (besides the usual suspects, we found two very uncommon nudibranchs, quite a few crabs, a flathead and some big schools of fish on the reef). After a nice and cruisy dive on the reef you get to the shipwreck, which actually covers quite a large area (the ship was an iron three master, so it must have been massive!) and there is heaps of life on it! There used to be a buoy on this wreck, which made it easy to find, but unfortunately that is gone now (November 2013). At low tide though, when we dived it, you can see one of the masts sticking out (only about 40 centimeters or so) which makes the wreck easy to locate. You can also keep heading north along the beach in about 3.5 metres of water and you will find it. The day we dived it we had beautiful visibility (about 10-15 metres on the reef and more above the sand). We didn't encounter any currents and the water temperature was around the 17 degrees Celsius. When Deb is not on board and I am working, I will use the large LED TV in the Salon as my monitor and sit on the salon settee. It is a bit more comfortable and I like the extra real estate for the screen. This was the case last week as I was sitting in the salon working. It was a great day because it was still warm but overcast so no bright sunlight for a change, I had the hatches all opened up and had a nice gentle breeze running through the boat. Half way through the call the wind started to pick up, then it started to pick up a lot, and I could hear the howling in the distance as the wind blew through the rigging of the row of sailboats just upwind of me. While on the call, I muted my microphone and closed the large forward hatch. As I finished that the sky opened up with a torrential rain pour. I was quickly closing the 4 hatches in the roof that I had open and another 7 opening ports on the side of the boat. All of this was going on while I was still on this conference call and un-muting the microphone to respond to a question or comment then muting as quickly as I could again. By the time the call ended, the wind was blowing a steady 20 knots and gusting to about 30. The rain subsided for the most part and when I went back up top, the temperature felt like it dropped 15 degrees in that hour. I continued to work the rest of the day on meetings and phone calls remotely, however the wind really had the boat hobby horsing and rocking pretty good. When the wind starts to blow that hard, there are a few interesting sounds that happen on the boat, that we are just used to, but others wonder what they are. I attached a small video below that shows me sitting on the salon settee working. You can get a sense for how much motion there was on the boat this day, and we were tied up to a dock. If you listen closely you can hear a few things in the background. The first is the wind that you can still hear howling if you listen carefully. This is with all of the hatches battened down and closed up tight. You will also hear a bit of a ringing sound or long dull clank. This sound is actually made from two different things that run up the inside of the mast. There are wires that run from the base of the mast to the top of the mast for lighting on top of the mast, antenna, etc. This is combined with the lines that run up the mast for raising the sails. When the boat rocks a certain way they hit on the inside of the mast making this sound. The other is a loud thump , this is actually something that you should not hear, but I still had an antenna for the TV run up on the flag halyard and when the wind would blow it hit the stays (the metal wires that run from the sides of the boat to the top of the mast to stabilize it). It is a lot like a giant piano or guitar string being plucked. El modelo de avión es casi lo de menos mientras la hélice funcione bien. Basta que el modelo planee un poco sin propulsión, y eso garantiza que con la hélice volará más lejos. También es clave que la hélice es de papel, no de cartón, para que tenga muy poca inercia y no haga girar el avión en sentido contrario. Para que sea resistente se moja entera en superglue. El fuselaje es un cilindro de papel (una sola vuelta basta). La goma va dentro, de modo que el cilindro no sufre deformaciones fuera de eje, y resulta muy resistente. El eje motor de la hélice es lo más difícil de hacer, pero es reutilizable si el avión se rompe, de modo que vale la pena hacerlo con cuidado. Mucha suerte. Just if the model can glide without the power of the propeller, it's fine; the propeller will do the final thrust. It's also key that the propeller is as light as possible, so that it doesn't cause the airplane to spin in the opposite direction. Mine is out of paper (instead of cardboard), rigidized by superglue to withstand the winding up. The fuselage is a simple one-turn paper cylinder. Since the rubber band is inside, the cylinder doesn't bend at all. The propeller group is reusable and splittable from the fuselage so it can be used on further models if current one breaks. Sunrise November 20, 2013 Mon Tiki is a day and a half out from New York Harbor and headed towards Norfolk VA. The day before, Tuesday, had been a tough crossing 30 miles out from the mouth of the Delaware Bay, with northwest winds gusting to 30kts+ and short 8-10 foot seas, followed by a night with temperatures into the 30s. This footage was shot Wednesday morning, when the winds had clocked north and slacked to about 20kts -- picnic weather compared to the previous day. Mon Tiki's crew was feeling a little beat up, but Mon Tiki herself wasn't showing any strain. By noon we were sailing under the northern most span of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel and into the Chesapeake Bay proper. The music is "Seductio ad Absurdum" off of Black Hi-Lighters's second album "Bite the Bullet" and featuring my friend James Poulos on vocals. I choose this music because loving the sea is a bit like loving a beautiful but temperamental and indifferent woman. Maybe you'd be better off loving someone else, but you don't choose love, love chooses you.
