Scared for My Life | Our Worst Storm Yet in 40 Knot Winds (New Sailors)

What started as a simple sail to drop our friends off in Koh Lanta quickly turned into one of the roughest days we’ve ever had at sea. We set off in high spirits — five friends onboard, blue skies, and a fresh catch for dinner — but as the day went on, the weather closed in fast. By the time we reached the coast, the wind was howling at 40 knots, waves were breaking over the bow, and our anchor started dragging. We tried to wait out the storm, but Mother Nature had other plans. After six months of living aboard Stella, we’ve learned a lot about sailing — but this storm threw everything at us. It tested our nerves, our teamwork, and our boat more than ever before. From losing the engine mid-storm to turning back for safety, it was a true lesson in what it means to respect the ocean.
