Crossing from the Canary Islands to Cape Verde on our Lagoon 400 catamaran, part 1: days one to three of the passage, my helm setup and boat instruments explained, the SV.GOAT sailing app at sea, a mahi-mahi and a thousand dolphins. We finally left Europe: more than 800 nautical miles from Fuerteventura to Cape Verde, six or seven days, just the two of us. On day one I show you how I sail now — the chartplotter set one hour ahead, the radar three hours ahead, PredictWind routing on a rugged tablet, NMEA 2000 data over Wi-Fi, and the weather alarm in our own SV.GOAT app, which reads the boat's own sensors (pressure, wind, temperature, humidity) and tells you what the forecast actually means for you. Then a mahi-mahi on the first afternoon and two minutes of dolphins at dusk. Day two: the blonde does night watches for the first time — no moon, 20 knots, and she was there. The sailing log in the app, a thousand dolphins and pilot whales, two swells at once, and her first seasickness in all our years aboard. Day three: nine hours of darkness and a red-light dawn, a 135-mile day, our position and the performance coach in the app ("the machine is learning"), a very bored Vlad, the Code Zero moved across, and mahi ceviche for dinner. The SV.GOAT app — follow our boat, or set up your own (iOS and Android): https://svgoat.app Android: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.sailboat.monitor iPhone & iPad: https://apps.apple.com/app/id6757436237 CHAPTERS 0:00 A really nice day 0:37 My helm setup for an ocean passage 2:30 The SV.GOAT weather alarm 5:12 Fish on 5:39 A beautiful mahi-mahi 6:09 Dolphins at dusk 8:09 Her first night watch 9:47 The sailing log in the app 11:16 Day two on watch 11:46 Two swells, first seasickness 14:28 Red-light dawn, 135 miles 17:46 The performance coach 19:23 Vlad is bored 19:34 Moving the Code Zero 21:35 Ceviche and the night watch Next: part 2 — the pirate border, day five, and Boa Vista.
