4 Men Sent to Die in 60-Foot Seas | The Finest Hours True Story
On February 18, 1952, two oil tankers broke in half off Cape Cod in the same storm. One got her mayday off, and the entire Coast Guard of New England went to her. The other, the SS Pendleton, never got a call out. Her crew stood on half a ship and listened on a radio that could only receive while a full-scale rescue was run for somebody else. That night, four Coast Guardsmen took a 36-foot wooden lifeboat over the Chatham Bar in a 70-knot nor'easter, at night, in a snowstorm. Their own station thought they were going to die. They came back with 32 men. This is the true story behind The Finest Hours, and it's not the Hollywood version. The movie left out the part that mattered most, and it got one of the most important moments completely backwards. You'll hear Bernie Webber tell it himself, in his own voice, from a 1967 radio interview. And you'll hear about the second rescue nobody talks about: a chief engineer named Ray Sybert who took command of 32 frightened men on a broken ship and fought to keep her off the shoals with no bow, no radio, and no reason to believe help was coming. I've been on the receiving end of a Coast Guard rescue myself. This is the greatest story I've ever told. đ Lifeboat House Project: https://www.orleanshistoricalsociety.org/cg36500-lifeboat-house-project đ Keep her afloat: https://cg36500.org/Afloat-CG36500.html ââââââââââââââââââââââ â± CHAPTERS ââââââââââââââââââââââ 0:00 â The Greatest Rescue Story Ever Told 1:06 â SS Pendleton Breaks in Half: No Mayday 3:01 â Bernie Webber's 1967 Interview: The Sources 4:35 â Why T2 Tankers Broke in Half 7:02 â The Nor'easter of February 1952 7:56 â The Fort Mercer Mayday 8:44 â How the Coast Guard Found the Pendleton 9:48 â Ray Sybert: The Rescue Nobody Talks About 10:50 â A Captain's Lesson: Give Your Crew a Job 11:38 â What The Finest Hours Movie Got Backwards 13:35 â Bernie Webber Watches Another Crew Go Out 15:01 â The Breeches Buoy Plan 16:26 â "Go Out and See What You Can Do" 17:01 â The Crew: Fitzgerald, Livesey and Maske 18:50 â Daniel Cluff's Impossible Order 21:38 â Why Fitzgerald Wasn't Scared and Webber Was 24:17 â "Proceed as Directed" 25:03 â Rock of Ages and Harbor Lights 26:02 â What Is a Bar?
