A Simple Mockup Can Save You Hours of Boatbuilding - Building the Poulsbo Boat - Episode 11
Howdy folks! Welcome back to Nomad Boat Building. My name is Mark Reuten, and we're picking up where we left off on the Poulsbo Boat Project. The inwales and thwart risers are glued up, but there's one more piece to fit before we can fair everything and get on with planking. The shape of the transom means I need to add extra material to one inwale, and that calls for some careful tapering and compound bevels. In this episode, I work through the fit, demonstrate my technique for cutting compound bevels by hand, and make a quick mockup to test how much material I can remove before shaping the real piece. A little experimentation up front can save a lot of awkward work on the boat. I also fit and glue the final filler piece using thickened epoxy and polymer nails. With the inwales and thwart risers complete, we're getting closer to fairing the structure and starting the cedar-strip planking. The original Poulsbo boat was a sport fishing boat built by Roland Young in Washington using traditional carvel plank construction. This version is being built with cedar-strip construction and fibreglass inside and out.
