This time on Distant Shores we navigate from the lovely town of Horta on the Azorean island of Faial to Angra do Heroismo on the island of Terceira where we meet up with long time friends, experience bulls running in the streets, attend the biggest party in the Azorean Islands and depart for a 1200 mile passage to Europe. #sailingazores #angradoheroismo #sailinginfog

In this Sailing Helios episode, we kick off with an early dawn departure from the charming historic port of Peñíscola, sailing alongside the fishing fleet toward Valencia, Spain's stunning coastal city and major commercial harbour. The ancient historic centre welcomes us—but we've timed our arrival perfectly (or chaotically!) during the vibrant October festivities for Día de la Comunitat Valenciana and the Moors & Christians (Moros y Cristianos) celebrations! Harbor-area concerts blast through the night, and the next day we're hit with massive parades, people in elaborate period costumes (think medieval knights, Moorish warriors, striped robes, and more), marching bands, and thunderous "gunshots" from replica muskets/arquebuses fired right in the square—smoke everywhere, crowds loving it, no one running because it's all tradition! We explore Valencia's top sights amid the festive energy before setting sail the following morning to our next destination, Dénia. Perfect for fans of sailing adventures, Mediterranean cruising, Spanish history, cultural festivals with gunpowder displays, parades, and unexpected surprises! If you love real sailing journeys and stumbling into epic local events like Moors & Christians in Valencia, hit play! Subscribe for more yacht life, port explorations, and wild discoveries along the Spanish coast. Episode S03E45 Recorded: Early October 2025 Viewer-first. Ad-free. Supported by those who choose to. We’re setting sail from the remote outpost town of Gove, in the far reaches of Northern Australia, for one of our 350 nautical mile passage across the Gulf of Carpentaria! We’ve been awaiting this weather window to head against the trade winds - and that time has finally come. From Gove to the Torres Strait — it’s time to go! Along the way, we’re rigging up new fishing lures, hoping for a big catch after something absolutely hammered our last one. Charlie is on deck helping build a new lure setup with some flashy skirts, and we can’t wait to see what bites in these fish-filled northern waters. So grab a coffee or a beer, settle in, and join us as we cross the Gulf of Carpentaria — one of the most remote and beautiful parts of Australia. The Sevenstar Contest Meeting Mallorca 2023, held in the last week of September at the RCNP Yacht Club, showcased a spectacular fleet of yachts and thrilling races against the stunning backdrop of the Bay of Palma. As crews and spectators mingled over cocktails and tapas on the pool-side terrace of the pristine white clubhouse, the initial windless morning delayed race starts until the afternoon sea breeze enabled competitive racing in up to 14 knots of wind. Following the daily races, participants enjoyed exquisite dinners at local hotspots like Cappuccino’s and RCNP’s Restaurante El Náutico, basking in the famous, richly-hued Palma sunsets. Saturday's coastal race unfolded seamlessly with a timely start, leading into an engaging route around Isla del Sech and culminating in an afternoon prize-giving party. These days of intense competition and leisurely evenings encapsulated a seamless blend of sporting spirit and luxurious relaxation. @YachtTransport #SailingMallorca #RCNPYachtClub #SailingRegatta #ContestYachts

Argh! I'm repairing the exhaust hose on my Catalina 30 sailboat in this episode. We had a leak and have to diagnose & repair the problem to keep the boat from taking on water while under motor power. I had to replace the exhaust flap and hose to keep the boat dry while using the engine. We ordered the replacement exhaust flange from http://CatalinaDirect.com. We hope this helps anyone who is experiencing this leak in the bilge from the aft of the boat. @SailingIntoNirvana Website: http://sailingintonirvana.com Social: https://facebook.com/sailingintonirvana Patreon: http://patreon.com/sailingintonirvana Fire Dragon Spices: http://piraterodneys.com Please leave a comment or reach out to us if interested in supporting what we do! Bristol 39/40 Used Boat Review: https://www.practical-sailor.com/sailboat-reviews/bristol-39-40/ You can find Bristol 39s and Bristol 40s for around $40,000 — and at first glance, that sounds like one of the best deals in cruising sailboats. Forty feet. Ted Hood design. Classic CCA lines. Solid fiberglass hull. Encapsulated lead keel. So why are they so affordable? In this episode, we take a deep dive into the Bristol 39 and Bristol 40 — their history, construction, sailing characteristics, stability numbers, cockpit design, rig options, and real-world ownership considerations. We also look at the Pearson–Grumman split that led to the founding of Bristol Yachts, and how that philosophy shaped the boat. Is this a legitimate budget bluewater cruiser… or a vintage classic that requires clear-eyed expectations? If you're considering buying a Bristol 40, shopping for an affordable offshore sailboat, or just want to understand CCA-era cruiser design, this episode breaks down the facts so you can decide for yourself. Topics covered: History of Bristol Yachts and Clint Pearson Ted Hood’s design influence Construction details and encapsulated keel Stability and offshore capability Interior volume vs modern 40-footers Cockpit drainage and offshore considerations Sloop, cutter, and yawl rig options What ownership really costs beyond the $40K price tag If you enjoy deep-dive sailboat reviews, subscribe for more Practical Sailor-style analysis every week.

In this episode, we’re diving deep into a serious carbon fiber upgrade session. First up, we check out the tricky installation of a curved carbon-nomics panel into the cabin top (big shout out to Shane for getting that twisty piece in!). We’re sticking to our boat-building standard: if it’s black, it’s bonded with epoxy and carbon. Then we’re breaking down these incredible @C-TECH CT40 sail battens. Shayne explains why these aren’t just any carbon tubes: - How they are custom-designed for specific sails (even down to the individual pocket!). - The science of "hoop fiber" vs. "unidirectional" layup. - Why you can't just cut them in half (splitting them ruins the stiffness and causes twisting!). - How we are repurposing these high-tech race boat battens for our cruising boat. Where are we using these? - Compression Post: Future-proofing the mast base. - Push Pit: Building a carbon push pit (sorry stainless steel guy!). - Starlink Mount: Using Carbon c-tech battens for the post. - Cabin Top Stiffening: Attempting to recess these into the ceiling for wiring and strength. - Transom Beam: Stiffening the back to handle a traveler track. CHAPTERS: 0:00 - Intro & Carbon Panel Check 1:30 - Installing the twisted carbon nomex 4:00 - The C-Tech Batten deep dive (How they are made) 8:00 - Unidirectional vs Hoop fiber explained 11:00 - Why you can't split these battens 14:00 - Compression posts & future-proofing 17:00 - Starlink & Push Pit plans 20:00 - Stiffening the cabin top (The challenge) USEFUL LINKS ➜ Supporting blog post https://youngbarnacles.com/ ➜ Want to go deeper?
