Hi and welcome aboard @SailingAstridTheWombat We are Gav and Shezz and two and a half years ago we bought our Beneteau Oceanis 430 sailboat with absolutely no sailing experience and jumped straight into the deep end of liveaboard sailing. Our very first passage was just over 700 nautical miles, launching us headfirst into the world of bluewater cruising, learning to sail, and real life at sea. Since that moment, we’ve been fully immersed in boat life, documenting the journey of turning a production cruising sailboat into a capable, self-sufficient home as we prepare for full-time liveaboard life. From major sailboat upgrades and off-grid power systems to everyday maintenance and skills building, we’re learning what it truly takes to own, sail, and live on a boat while working toward our goal of sailing around the world. If you’re into sailing adventures, beginner sailing, sailboat ownership, cruising lifestyle, and traveling the world by sailboat, our journey is all about real-time learning, ocean freedom, and building the confidence to chase long-term world cruising under sail. In this episode of our liveaboard sailing journey, we explore the incredible coastline of Moreton Island and climb to the top of the famous sandhills for one of the most breathtaking views we’ve ever seen from our cruising sailboat. After sailing across the bay and anchoring off this wild and remote island, we head ashore to experience the natural beauty that makes this destination so special for sailors, cruisers, and lovers of boat life. Living as liveaboard sailors, we’re constantly reminded that some of the most unforgettable experiences come from places you can only truly reach by boat. Moreton Island is a dream stop for anyone interested in coastal cruising, anchoring in remote locations, and combining sailing adventures with land exploration. From the water, the towering sandhills look surreal — but climbing to the top reveals sweeping views of the ocean, coastline, and our tiny floating home anchored below. This episode captures the heart of cruising life and slow travel by sailboat. We leave the boat behind for a few hours, hike through soft sand, and take in the raw, untouched landscape that makes island sailing and world travel by sailboat so unique. It’s moments like this that balance the practical side of sailboat ownership — maintenance, upgrades, and passage planning — with the adventure and freedom that come with life at sea. If you’re interested in liveaboard sailing, beginner sailing, sailboat living, or you’re a sailboat owner dreaming of bigger adventures, this episode shows the lifestyle side of bluewater cruising. It’s not just about miles sailed; it’s about the places your boat can take you — hidden beaches, dramatic landscapes, and views you have to earn. We are preparing our boat and ourselves for sailing around the world, and experiences like this are a huge part of that journey. Exploring islands, anchoring off remote shores, and discovering nature from our floating home is what liveaboard cruising life is all about. Follow along as we share real boat life, sailing adventures, and the path toward full-time world cruising — one anchorage, one island, and one unforgettable view at a time. Join us now as we settle into liveaboard life and get our boat ready to take off and sail around the world. As new sailors we want to share all of our learnings and keep it real in our videos. We want to show step by step what it takes to choose a boat, buy the boat and learn how to sail. Our sailing learning curve is steep so come along with us as we learn and grow as liveaboard sailors. We promise you will have a laugh! Sailing through squalls with the family prepping for race day.

We’re forced to motortack to avoid tuna nets, while staying within the Orca-safe zone of 20 meters… but we also get to enjoy some truly beautiful, calm summer sailing ☀️ Along the way, we explore charming cities like Huelva and Cádiz, soaking up the Spanish summer vibes before reaching this major milestone in our sailing journey. Reading the Telltales on Your Sails: https://www.practical-sailor.com/sails-rigging-deckgear/reading-the-telltales-on-your-sails You’re trimming your mainsail WRONG. Today we break down the most common mainsail trim mistakes sailors make — and then I’ll show you the exact step-by-step sail trim procedure that will make your boat faster, safer, and way more comfortable. Whether you’re racing, cruising, learning to sail, or living aboard, proper mainsail trim is one of the most important skills you can develop. This video covers mainsail twist, outhaul tension, traveler positioning, backstay and mast bend, luff tension, draft control, leech tension, and how to use the vang correctly. We also talk about heel angle, weather helm, and why your sailboat feels out of balance when the trim is wrong. If your boat heels too much… If your helm feels heavy… If you can’t point high… If your speed is disappointing… This video will FIX all of it. ⚓ MAINSAIL TRIM REFERENCE PACK (All Sources Mentioned) These are the guides, PDFs, and videos I recommend if you want to go deeper: • Quantum Sails – Mainsail Trim Guide (PDF) https://www.quantumsails.com/getattachment/Resources-and-Expertise/Articles/Downloadable-Sail-Trim-Guides/QuantumSails_TrimGuide_Mainsail.pdf.aspx • Speed & Smarts – “Mainsail Trim” https://www.speedandsmarts.com/toolbox/articles2/the-fast-course/mainsail-trim • Sail Magazine – “Mainsail Trim 101” https://www.sailmagazine.com/diy/mainsail-trim-101/ • NauticEd – “How to Trim the Mainsail — Traveler or Mainsheet?” https://sailing-blog.nauticed.org/how-to-trim-the-mainsail-traveler-or-mainsheet/ • Yachting News – “Mainsail Trimming: 4 Steps to Keep It in Shape” https://www.yachtingnews.com/mainsail-trimming/ • All At Sea Caribbean – “Guide to Sail Control: Mainsail Trim” https://www.allatsea.net/guide-to-sail-control-part-ii-mainsail-trim/ • North Sails / RSYS – Mainsail Trim Webinar https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q-W9fA7Vgro • Sail Trim Masterclass https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lWRI8MJ67WY • “3 Ways To Sail Faster — Mainsail Trim Techniques” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ClMisGS9WJg Practical Sailor is your trusted resource for reviews of sailboats and sailing gear. https://www.practical-sailor.com Chat with us on Facebook! https://www.facebook.com/PracticalSailor/

In this Sailing Helios episode, we kick off with an early dawn departure from the charming historic port of Peñíscola, sailing alongside the fishing fleet toward Valencia, Spain's stunning coastal city and major commercial harbour. The ancient historic centre welcomes us—but we've timed our arrival perfectly (or chaotically!) during the vibrant October festivities for Día de la Comunitat Valenciana and the Moors & Christians (Moros y Cristianos) celebrations! Harbor-area concerts blast through the night, and the next day we're hit with massive parades, people in elaborate period costumes (think medieval knights, Moorish warriors, striped robes, and more), marching bands, and thunderous "gunshots" from replica muskets/arquebuses fired right in the square—smoke everywhere, crowds loving it, no one running because it's all tradition! We explore Valencia's top sights amid the festive energy before setting sail the following morning to our next destination, Dénia. Perfect for fans of sailing adventures, Mediterranean cruising, Spanish history, cultural festivals with gunpowder displays, parades, and unexpected surprises! If you love real sailing journeys and stumbling into epic local events like Moors & Christians in Valencia, hit play!
