A perfect Florida boat trip on the Gulf Coast! 🚤 We cruise into beautiful Sarasota for a stop at the iconic Marina Jack. It was a gorgeous day for seeing the city from the water and enjoying the vibrant scene at the marina. On the way back, we couldn't resist stopping at Egmont Key! This little slice of paradise is a historic preserve and state park located at the mouth of Tampa Bay. It truly was an incredible adventure and a classic Florida trip! In January, Ben Harris made the decision to have an iron keel cast in a Cornish foundry for the John Alden-designed MALABAR IV schooner build. I interviewed a friend of ours, a naval architect, to discuss it. However, we scrapped the video as the whole keel casting decision evolved, and this video explains the current situation. The next film will include a visit from Rémi (who featured in EP01) and his friend, who also attends the French boatbuilding college in Brittany, Les Ateliers de l'Enfer. We finally get stuck into our sailboat refit, starting with the removal of our old, leaky hatches and windows. What begins as a straightforward job quickly turns into a bigger project when we uncover even more hidden wood rot beneath the frames — just what every sailor loves to find… With no working engine (our prop shaft snapped), we have to figure out how to move our 45-foot sailboat once again. The plan? Tow her up the Cairns inlet using a couple of small tinnys — a DIY towing mission that’s becoming all too familiar. Between the window removal, surprise repairs, and yet another sailboat towing operation, this week is all about making slow but steady progress on our floating home.
