What is the Coriolis Effect—and why does it matter to sailors, pilots, and weather forecasters? In this video from Stress-Free Sailing, we break down the Coriolis force in a simple, visual way using a ball and a spinning fairground ride. You'll see how this invisible force, caused by Earth's rotation, makes winds and ocean currents curve rather than move in a straight line. It's a fascinating phenomenon that helps explain global wind patterns, trade winds, and why storms spin in different directions depending on which hemisphere you're in. 🎥 Watch the demonstration and finally make sense of how Coriolis works—no maths degree required! 🧭 Perfect for sailors, students, navigators, and weather nerds alike. #CoriolisEffect #WeatherExplained #SailingTips #Navigation #SailingEducation #StressFreeSailing #FairgroundPhysics #Meteorology #CoriolisForce #SpinningEarth
We’re setting sail on Part 1 of our trip to the Isle of Wight! ⛵ This episode covers our journey from Suffolk to Southampton — our biggest sailing adventure yet as a family of four (plus our amazing crew member, Hans!). Having Hans with us as a much-needed extra pair of hands made a world of difference during long passages and sleepless nights at sea. 🌊 In this episode: • Setting off from Suffolk on our biggest trip yet • Sailing overnight for the first time • Navigating our first lock • Crossing the Thames Estuary • Life on board with a baby and toddler • Sailing with crew for the first time Join us for Part 1 of our Isle of Wight sailing adventure, and subscribe to follow our next leg from Southampton to the Isle of Wight & back home again in Part 2!
This episode, we explore one of the most remote and restricted places on Earth: Chagos. Located in the middle of the Indian Ocean, the Chagos Archipelago is a chain of coral atolls few people will ever visit. With no towns, no resorts, and no permanent residents, these islands feel almost untouched — both above and below the surface. After securing a permit and sailing days across open ocean, we dropped anchor inside Salomon Atoll. What we found was extraordinary. Crystal-clear lagoons, thriving coral reefs, and an abundance of marine life unlike anything we’ve seen before. Even the Chagos clownfish, found nowhere else on Earth, thrives here within one of the largest marine protected areas in the Indian Ocean. But Chagos is more than just a remote paradise. For generations, the Chagossian people lived on these islands, building communities around the coconut plantations and surrounding reefs. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, they were forced to leave their homeland. Today, the islands remain largely uninhabited — quiet, beautiful, and layered with history. In this episode, we search for unridden waves, explore abandoned settlements, dive some of the healthiest reefs in the world, and reflect on what it means to visit a place like this as a sailing family. This is Chagos — a paradise with a past. 🌊 Join Our Sailing Family Adventure! We’re the Fothergills – a family of six living full-time aboard our catamaran, Happy Days. If you’re shopping for a performance cruising catamaran, one of the hardest questions to answer is: Why do similar-size catamarans have such different prices? In this conversation, Dean Paarman and Patrick Roscoe explain how catamarans are actually priced — and why the number you first see on a brochure often doesn’t represent the real ownership cost. This video walks through what experienced buyers eventually learn: you’re not just comparing boats… you’re comparing ownership experiences. We cover: • What a “base boat” truly means (and why it varies so much between brands) • Hidden costs that commonly appear after purchase • Why equipment specifications matter more than headline price • The purpose behind the Essential Voyager Package • Launch, commissioning, and handover realities • Training, education, and long-term support • Warranty advocacy and OEM relationships • The importance of owner community and global service networks • Why delivery location matters more than most buyers realize • How resale value and certified pre-owned programs affect true cost of ownership The goal of this video is not to compare brands — but to help you ask better questions when evaluating any catamaran. Because the real value of a cruising yacht is rarely visible on an option sheet. Who This Video Is For? This is especially helpful if you are: - Seriously researching catamarans - Comparing brands in the 45–58 ft range - Planning extended cruising or liveaboard sailing - Concerned about support, resale, or ownership complexity - Trying to understand why prices differ so dramatically Key Takeaway A catamaran purchase is not just a product decision. It’s a long-term service relationship involving training, support, infrastructure, and community. And those things often determine satisfaction far more than initial price. Rescue at Sea: We Saved a Life On Our Sailboat When Whale Watching turns into a Rescue Mission Ep 92
What was meant to be a calm and beautiful day of sailing in Moreton Bay, Australia turned into one of the most unforgettable experiences of our liveaboard sailing journey so far. We left the marina for a relaxing day sail, ready to enjoy the sunshine, spot migrating whales, and soak up the freedom of life aboard our sailboat. But as every sailor knows — the ocean can change everything in an instant. While out enjoying the water, we spotted something unusual in the distance. Within moments, we realized someone was in serious trouble. What began as a peaceful day of whale watching from our sailboat suddenly became a real-life sea rescue.
