Some of the biggest waves on Earth are invisible — up to 170 metres tall, taller than a 50-storey tower. And the ship sailing above feels nothing. They form in the Luzon Strait between Taiwan and the Philippines. Twice a day, the tide pushes the ocean over two underwater ridges and drags down the thermocline — the sharp boundary between warm, light water on top and cold, heavy water below. When the tide eases, that dip is released and steepens into a train of giant internal waves that travel hundreds of kilometres west across the South China Sea. At the surface the sea rises by less than an inch, but radar satellites can see them from space as bright bands of ripples. Sometimes the best places are the ones you find when things don't quite go to plan! After a lovely walk exploring the beautiful Pembrokeshire coastline, we needed to find somewhere to spend the night in our campervan. Simple enough, you'd think! Unfortunately, finding an available campsite proved rather more difficult than expected. We'd tried several places, everywhere seemed to be booked, and with virtually no mobile phone signal, even checking availability was becoming a challenge. Eventually, we found Rhosson Ganol Caravan and Camping Site, near St Davids in Pembrokeshire, and managed to secure a pitch. And what a place we'd stumbled across! With spectacular views towards Ramsey Island and the surrounding coastline, it turned out to be a wonderful spot to spend the evening. Once we'd settled in, I headed out along the Pembrokeshire Coast Path to explore the nearby cliffs and lifeboat station, before getting the drone up to capture the coastline in the beautiful evening light. What started as a frustrating search for somewhere to sleep ended with some of the most memorable scenery of our Wales adventure. Clemens Stecher kommt gerade von Trainings und Prüfungen in England zurück und hat eine klare Antwort: Du musst segeln können, und zwar so, dass das Boot fast zum verlängerten Arm wird. Die beiden sprechen darüber, warum gerade Manöver auf engem Raum oft Lücken offenlegen, auch bei erfahrenen Seglerinnen und Seglern: unter Segeln an Steg, Boje und Ankerplatz gehen, von dort wieder wegsegeln, beidrehen und beiliegen.  Clemens erklärt zwei Manöver, die viele nicht kennen: Scandalizing, um das Großsegel vor dem Anluven zu entlasten, und Circling, bei dem das Boot mit fixiertem Ruder enge Kreise segelt. Außerdem geht es darum, was Dickschiffsegler von der Jolle lernen können, woran erfahrene Ausbilder und Prüfer schon am Gang über das Deck erkennen, wie vertraut jemand mit dem Boot ist, um den Unterschied zwischen Coastal und Offshore und um Übungen, mit denen sich Lücken vor der Prüfung schließen lassen.
