When I think of Adlard Coles, I think of the publishing house, but the fact is that the person behind that same institution was first off a small craft sailor just like you and I. This, his first book, is the tale of his first ever, long-distance cruise. What a career lay ahead of him! Despite not really knowing exactly what they were doing, Coles and his crew ventured across the storm-tossed North Sea and into the sand bar nightmare of the Zuider Zee & Frisian Islands. Unperturbed, they then crossed into the Baltic Sea, finally fetching themselves up in Copenhagen. Whist the voyage alone, in a 20ft yacht is noteworthy enough, Coles' narrative gives a unique glimpse also into the bubbling cauldron of unrest, that was sweeping Europe at this time, exactly 101 years ago. With an imminent test sail of Mochyn Du, my Mirror dinghy I find that the wheel bearings have finally gone. In fact they're shot so I need to rep[lace them. IN this video i show you the whole process of how to change the bearings and also the casings so we have a brand spanking new set of bearings for the trailer.

요트 위에서 보내는 하루는 늘 작은 긴장과 설렘이 공존한다. 오늘은 요트에 EPIRB를 설치했다. 부디 쓰지 않기를 바라는 장치지만, 바다 위에서는 반드시 필요한 존재다. 기존에 있던 거치대를 활용해 달기로 했고, 위치를 맞추어 고정할 준비를 했다. 하지만 구멍을 뚫는 과정에서 브라켓이 생각보다 단단해 더 튼튼한 드릴 비트가 필요했다. 결국 장비를 챙겨 집으로 가져가 구멍을 뚫고, 잠시 우리 댕댕이들과 놀며 숨을 고르는 시간도 가졌다. 다시 돌아와 볼트를 하나하나 조여가며 장착을 마쳤다. 태양광 패널 때문에 선택지는 많지 않았지만, 결국 선미 바깥쪽에 달기로 했다. 하늘이 잘 보이고 비상 상황에서도 바로 꺼낼 수 있는 자리였다. 설치가 끝난 뒤, 튼튼히 고정된 EPIRB를 바라보니 묘한 안도감이 밀려왔다. 겉으론 작은 장치 하나지만, 필요할 때는 생명을 지켜주는 신호탄이 될 것이다. 오늘도 바다는 고요했다.

Numa situação extrema com tempestade em alto mar sua vida depende da determinação e competência da tripulação. Na hora de enfrentar uma situação real seu conhecimento e coragem são colocados a prova. Dentre muitas situações que já vivi em três anos morando a bordo. A última travessia que fizemos de Bocas del Toro a San Blas posso colocar como exemplo. Há cem milhas de San Blas ficamos sem motor, entupiu a entrada de água salgada que em um motor Náutico é o que esfria a água que esfria o motor. E o que fazer!? Como íamos atracar numa Marina que não conhecemos dentre corais e pedras.. Um lugar estreito pra entrar, muitas ondas e vento. E o que fizemos!? Chegamos somente à vela, ancoramos na entrada da Marina há uma milha de distância pedimos ajuda pelo rádio e um bote da Marina foi nos buscar com uma pequena lancha, atamos um cabo na proa do veleiro e ele nos arrastou até a Marina. Poderíamos fazer loucuras e entrar somente a vela, mas seria uma manobra arriscada, sem segurança e sem estar num ambiente controlado, poderia sim dar certo ou não! Claro que o reboque teve um custo, mas comparar com o custes um acidente com a embarcação, nos faz escolher não correr esse rosco. O melhor capitão não é o mais louco ou inconsequente, e sim aquele que mede os riscos antes de tomar uma decisão. E decide pela segurança da embarcação e da tripulação. Em outras palavras: Um bom capitão não tem que provar suas habilidades há ninguém, porque ele sabe o que é capaz de fazer!

We are Easy Day Adventures, a family of four taking one adventure at a time. In this video series we are pointing North to Prudhoe Bay, Alaska to go swimming up in the Arctic Ocean. Why? Because it’s there. Plus, it will make a great adventure for our growing boys who are learning how to dream BIG. Why not come along for the ride? Sometimes we live on our sailboat, other times we explore Terra Firma with our OVRLND rig. Either way, it’s always an adventure! In this video we travel about 800 miles from Juneau to Hatcher Pass where we find an absolutely stunning hike on Marmot Peak. We first take a ferry from Juneau to Haines where we begin our time on the road. We journey through the Haines Highway Summit on a rainy day after crossing back into British Colombia reaching Haines Junction in the afternoon. The following day held another border crossing back into Alaska where we found a nice campsite on Indian Creek between Tok and Palmer. Our third travel day held views of the Matanuska Glacier and errands in the Palmer/Wasilla area. Finally, it was time to see Hatcher Pass which exceeded ALL of our expectations. Our first night was on a small pullout on Archangel Road with stunning 360-degree views. The following day held the most beautiful hike of our trip so far. An approximately 4 mile out and back hike up Marmot Peak held insane views of the Talkeetna Range. Once you gain the ridge, a special knife blade path takes you higher to the proper summit. We will never forget that hike. That afternoon we explored a little more and were rewarded for it. After driving to the end of Upper Willow Road, we found a campsite on public land with a triumphant view of the whole valley. The boys slept well that night after they opted for an after-dinner hike close to the campsite. What an amazing place!
