Six years ago Erin knew nothing about boats. Now she's the only person Jonny fully trusts to skipper The Rock without him on board in the Bay of Islands. Erin came to The Rock with “Below Deck” as her concept, expecting to make beds and wash dishes. Six seasons later, she's the skipper, the one who reads the weather, feels the tides, and knows every quirk of a 60-year-old steel car ferry that doesn't have the tech modern boats lean on. In this conversation, Jonny sits down with Erin to talk about the trip where a hydraulic hose blew on the anchor drum with guests still aboard, the moment she realised she could actually do this job, and the guest memory that still gets her right in her heart, a couple who'd never swum in the ocean before, working up the nerve to jump in. Erin also shares the walk in Paihia most visitors never hear about: a track up School Road where you can catch glow worms after dark. This is a Bay of Islands story about what it takes to run an overnight cruise the old-fashioned way. Hands-on, no autopilot, and worth every bit of the learning curve. 7/16/26 Passage #18 Rebecca Spit to Von Donop. Solo (16), Sailed to/From Anchor (25). Sailed off anchor in just a breath of southerly, ghosting past anchored boats in the crowded anchorage. It took nearly half an hour to ease clear without motoring. Out in Sutil Channel, the current dominated, but a whisper of breeze kept me making progress east. The whales stole the show. First their blows and then the tails, roughly twenty humpbacks, including one within a hundred yards. I radioed the ferry, but they already knew. When the wind filled back in, it brought about 10 knots, still from the south. Good sailing toward Von Donop. The inlet was narrow, wind against, current with me. I committed to sailing in. One tactical error near the rock mid-channel resulted in loss of helm. The boat pointed to shore, had to bear off toward it to regain speed, then turn away with less than a boat length to spare. After that, the rest settled down. Reached my friend's anchorage, started the engine, dropped sails, and rafted up for the night.

#PortugalijosKruizas #Portugalija #Lisabona #EVOA #Birdwatching #BirdPhotography #Buriavimas #Sailing #BoatLife #TravelVlog

Finally. BOOMERANG is back in the water. The sails are on. And we are leaving Green Bay on our way north up the Bay of Green Bay to Little Sturgeon Bay and Wave Pointe Marina. This Memorial Day Weekend journey north has been a family tradition for the last 17 years that was interrupted in 2025 when I made the trip solo due to concerns with the low water and weed infestation. Last year I wasn't confident that I could make it into Wave Pointe so I went alone in case I had to turn around and return to Green Bay. Thanks again for watching. We really appreciate that you've taken the time to view this video. We hope you enjoyed taking part in our Midwest sailing adventures and our journey aboard BOOMERANG. Guess what? It's Matt Rutherford on the show again! Matt & I recorded this episode while he was at-sea on the Valiant 42, far north of Russia and a few days away from entering the first ""pinch point"" on his Northern Sea Route above Siberia. Meanwhile I was recording from the cabin on SPICA outside Stockholm. Matt & I talked through how the first 4,000+ miles of his passage has gone so far, how he was featured in Playboy magazine, what he thinks his chances of success are and how much he enjoys being alone at sea. Make sure to donate to Matt's Ocean Research Project so they can continue doing the environmental and climate research in the far north, or better yet, come to our Crew Party in Annapolis this October where all proceeds will go to ORP! -- Support the podcast & become a member of The Quarterdeck, where Andy, August & Mia dive deep on the art of seam'nship. In this video, we explore how to sail by feel—using sight, sound and movement to understand what the boat is telling you without relying solely on the instruments. Topics include: • Feeling changes in acceleration and boat motion • Listening to the sails, rigging and water moving past the hulls • Watching sail shape, telltales and the surrounding water • Recognizing changes in wind strength and direction • Noticing when the boat feels overpowered or unbalanced • Connecting sensory observations with the instrument data • Developing a more natural understanding of sail trim and steering Instruments provide valuable information, but awareness begins with the boat itself. Learning to notice small changes in sound, movement and pressure helps you respond earlier and sail more smoothly. Learn more about Outer Passage: https://outer-passage.com

Our 4-year-old Coral is taking her underwater adventures to a whole new level! 🤿🌊 We explore the incredible Réserve Cousteau in Guadeloupe, where the water is crystal clear, the reef is full of life, and Coral starts diving below the surface all on her own. Watching her confidence grow underwater at only four years old was pretty amazing! But our peaceful Caribbean adventure doesn't stay peaceful for long. The swell rolls in and our anchorage becomes so uncomfortable that we decide it's time to move. We head to nearby Anse à Sable, where we stumble across something we weren't expecting — a natural hot spring right beside the sea! ♨️🌴 It turns into the perfect place for the kids to play while we relax and enjoy a glass of wine.
