Sein Weg ins Segeln begann erst während Corona: Ein Dachbodenfund – Wilfried Erdmanns „Allein gegen den Wind“ – zündete den Funken. Kurz darauf kaufte er eine Hurley 18 (Langkieler, Baujahr 1970) und startete alleine via Sizilien, Sardinien, Spanien bis Gibraltar. Von Lanzarote segelte er in ~29 Tagen nach Antigua – „perfekte Passatwinde, fast nichts kaputt“ – und brachte das Boot später aus purer Sehnsucht wieder nach Europa zurück. Heute segelt Nicolas eine Class 40 (2007, „Cheeky Tattoo“) – ein frühes, kompromisslos sportliches Design mit minimalem Komfort. 2024 setzte er bei der Round-Iceland-Challenge eine Referenzzeit single-handed: geplanter „Zwei-Wochen-Traum“, am Ende 16 Tage – nach harter Am-Wind-Passage mit Böen über 50 Knoten, später traumhaften Bedingungen entlang Islands Südküste und schließlich zwei Downwind-Tagen mit ~11 Knoten Schnitt zurück Richtung Irland.
