Around the world, traditional boats are built without lines planes, using skills and traditions handed down over the generations. The way we build in the west, starting with a skeleton of frames and wrapping them in planks is the exception. The great majority of boat builders start with the planks and put the frames in afterwards. The ways they do this vary greatly from place to place, resulting in a remarkable array of different boat shapes and traditions. This talk will whisk you around the world, comparing and contrasting the different approaches and end up by throwing light on the evolution of boatbuilding in Europe. Dr. Toste Tanhua is an enthusiastic cruising sailor and a chemical oceanographer. The last few years Toste has been able to combine his sailing hobby with work as an oceanographer, and has supported several campaigns to make ocean observations to support ocean science. Toste will be explaining what kind of contributions to science sailors have been doing, why these observations are important and what the impact of these observations are, also to the benefit to the sailors them self. Floatopia: A Vision for Sustainable Travel in Raja Ampat **What is Floatopia?** Floatopia is a pioneering eco-tourism initiative nestled in the breathtaking archipelago of Raja Ampat, Indonesia. It comprises a floating villa known as Floatopia and a trimaran sailboat, Big Kanu, both designed to provide immersive, environmentally conscious travel experiences. Our mission is to offer guests unparalleled access to one of the most pristine natural environments on the planet, while maintaining a firm commitment to sustainability and local community benefits. **Why Floatopia?** **Environmental Impact:** Raja Ampat is a marine paradise known for its significant biodiversity, including over 1,300 species of fish and 75% of the world's known coral species. However, like many pristine natural areas, it faces threats from conventional tourism practices that can damage the very wonders they seek to showcase. Floatopia addresses this by integrating eco-friendly technologies and sustainable practices in every aspect of its operations, from energy use to waste management, to ensure minimal environmental impact. **Cultural Integrity and Community Support:** Beyond environmental concerns, Floatopia is deeply committed to preserving the cultural integrity of Raja Ampat and enhancing the well-being of its local communities. Through community-engaged tourism, educational programs, and direct support of local projects, Floatopia aims to ensure that tourism revenues benefit local populations and help to sustain their unique cultural heritage. **Why It Matters:** The concept of sustainable travel is more critical now than ever. By supporting a model that prioritizes ecological and social responsibility, backers of Floatopia contribute to a global shift towards more sustainable tourism practices. This project not only helps protect one of the earth's most incredible ecosystems but also demonstrates a viable alternative to traditional tourism models that can be replicated in other sensitive environments worldwide. **How Backers Can Contribute:** **1. Funding Eco-Friendly Infrastructure:** Contributions will fund the enhancement of Floatopia's sustainable infrastructure, including solar power installations, water purification systems, and eco-friendly building materials for both the floating villa and the Big Kanu trimaran. **2. Supporting Conservation Initiatives:** Funds will also support ongoing conservation efforts such as coral reef restoration projects, wildlife protection programs, and environmental education for local communities and tourists. **3. Empowering Local Communities:** A portion of the funds raised will be directed towards initiatives that empower local communities through skills training in eco-tourism, supporting local artisans and small businesses, and developing community-led environmental projects. **How Contributions Make a Positive Impact:** Every contribution to Floatopia not only helps further the development of the project but also amplifies the positive impact on the environment and local communities. Backers have the unique opportunity to be part of a transformative project that: - **Protects biodiversity** by minimizing ecological footprints and funding direct conservation efforts. - **Supports local economies** by prioritizing local hiring, sourcing, and investing in community development. - **Promotes environmental awareness** among visitors and locals alike, fostering a culture of conservation and respect for nature. **Join Us:** We invite you to join us in making Floatopia a beacon of sustainable travel. Your support is not just a contribution to a project; it's an investment in a sustainable future and a testament to the belief that travel and conservation can go hand in hand. Together, we can ensure that the wonders of Raja Ampat are preserved and cherished for generations to come.

It's been a long time since I published a podcast and I finally I found after many, many attempts that the only way to get back on the horse was to just record whatever came out of my mouth for an hour and we can pick the bones out of it later. In this episode I talk about what has been happening for me in 2023, I talk about the Global Solo Challenge Race coming up in December and answer a great question that was sent to me earlier this year about being the skipper of a vessel at a young age. Regular programming will commence forthwith. If you have any ideas about my mixing elbow for a Yanmar 3JH2-TE engine or anything else that might help get Falcon to the start of the Global Solo Challenge, please email me at csmthemariner@gmail.com (mailto:csmthemariner@gmail.com) If you want to access more content and show support for this podcast please join me at www.patreon.com/themariner (http://www.patreon.com/themariner)   If you want to hear me reading sailing stories that I have chosen as being beneficial to developing seamanship skills, please look for The Mariner's Library wherever you get your podcasts.

In this episode we explore Estimated Position Error as a improving function of the 5,000 year history of Navigation.  While today's nav technology would be considered witchcraft 1000 years ago, everything we have now is built on the hard work and incredible bravery of millions of mariners who pushed the edges of what was possible with the tools of their time. This week I discuss the steps that led us from Gnomon to Non-Terrestrial Hyperbolic Trilateration (!) and what problems there may be with trusting today's tech too much. Just before you go.... If you recognize that creating this content requires hours of effort and you would like to help support for the equivalent of 25 cents per episode please visit my Patreon Site (https://www.patreon.com/themariner) and select the $5 per month option. If you want to get out on the water on a race, regatta or training voyage you can book with me here: Spartan Ocean Racing & Training (https://www.spartanoceanracing.com/) If you have any questions please send them to: csmthemariner@gmail.com  (mailto:csmthemariner@gmail.com) Cheers, CSM
