Five years ago, we didn’t know how to sail. During the pandemic, we started watching sailing videos on YouTube, escaping night after night to warm water and open horizons. What began as a nightly ritual slowly became something more. Our first lesson was on a small lake in central Iowa, a J/24 in light wind, quiet water. Since then, we haven’t stopped learning. In January, we’re taking our first blue-water trip: Grenada. This video is a look back at where we started, and a look forward to where we’re headed. This video follows us from Cape Coral, FL to Andros Island Bahamas with a quick stop in Marathon FL. It was an uneventful fairly easy and comfortable gulf stream crossing that took a total of about 39 hours. We arrived in a packed harbor filled with 7 buddy boats from Boot Key harbor in Marathon and a week later we were the only boat left. Morgan Bluff has been our home for the last week and a half and we are enjoying slowly slipping into island time. I enjoy the solitude of sailing solo, but as they say, "No man is an island." That's why I always enjoy when a friend drops by. This is my mate, John in his OzGoose, 'Tadpole'—a very capable boat that I always enjoy sailing alongside. On a recent trip camping on the shore of the stunning Lake Glenbawn in the Hunter Valley, I took my little fibreglass clinker, 'Sparkle'—a 10 foot lug rigged dinghy I can pretty much drag anywhere—when who should slip into my quiet harbour! I've got 4 130 watt flexible solar panels combined with a Bluetooth solar controller connected to four 12 volt 100AH lithium batteries. I've installed a disconnect to switch from shore power to solar power, and I've installed a 4000 watt power inverter to run my appliances on the boat. That's it.
