Join host Bela Musits and fellow sailor Mike Malekoff aboard Mike’s Hunter 44 Deck Salon as they continue their incredible voyage up the East Coast of the United States, relocating the boat from Brunswick, Georgia to Burlington, Vermont. This episode captures their journey from Schuyler Yacht Basin to Whitehall, New York, a leg that highlights the beauty, challenges, and joy of extended cruising. Bela and Mike start the episode with a lighthearted story about waking up to wet feet after an overnight rainstorm revealed a small leak in the forward cabin. The two sailors reflect on the realities of life aboard, including quirky boat design features like the windlass placement, which—unfortunately—channels drips right into the berth. Their good humor underscores a theme that runs throughout the voyage: the ability to laugh at inconveniences and embrace the unpredictability of cruising. As they recount the day’s sail, Bela and Mike describe the serene conditions the Champlain Canal. They note the unique blend of rural scenery, historic towns, and quiet stretches of water that make this region a hidden gem for sailors. From the tree-lined banks to the glimpses of wildlife, the passage feels more like a river journey than an open-water crossing, offering a peaceful contrast to earlier, more challenging legs of the trip. Listeners will enjoy the duo’s storytelling as they detail the sequence of locks they navigated, the friendly conversations with lockmasters, and the careful boat handling required in narrow channels. For sailors planning a similar voyage, Bela and Mike share practical observations on timing, line handling, and communication—essentials for smooth transits through canal systems. Beyond the technical aspects, this episode captures the camaraderie that develops over weeks at sea. With more than three weeks aboard at this point, Bela and Mike reflect on the rhythms of cruising life: anchoring, marina stops, cooking aboard, and evenings spent recounting the day’s adventures. Their partnership and shared enthusiasm for sailing shine through, giving listeners a window into the rewarding blend of challenge and relaxation that long-distance cruising offers. The conversation also touches on the natural beauty of upstate New York, the anticipation of reaching Whitehall, and the excitement of approaching the northern end of their journey. As they near Lake Champlain, both sailors express appreciation for how diverse the East Coast cruising grounds are—from the tidal waters of Georgia and the ICW to the freshwaters of Vermont. Whether you’re an experienced sailor, a cruiser planning your own East Coast voyage, or simply someone who enjoys stories from the water, this episode offers both practical insights and entertaining anecdotes. Bela and Mike balance seamanship with humor, making their reflections relatable and engaging for anyone drawn to the cruising lifestyle. SV-true-love is a 1981 Gulfstar 39 Sailmaster. She is a heavily laid up boat and perfect for the conditions in the northeast Atlantic region. Her interior is comprised of teak, marine grade plywood and some laminates. But the overall build of this boat was made with top quality materials, no longer used in most production boats today. Only 57 of these boats were built due to the high cost. In 1981, these boats were considerably more expensive at $150k+, then was the average home price in the US at the time.
Tom Cunliffe joins us for a proper cup of tea and a wide-ranging conversation about boats, books, and why real seamanship still matters. A merchant seaman turned delivery skipper, Yachtmaster Examiner, columnist and broadcaster, Tom has spent a lifetime at sea—from engine-less beginnings on the Norfolk Broads to long ocean passages on traditional gaff craft and a Colin Archer to South America, the Caribbean and back. He shares the formative moments that shaped his philosophy: sailing without an engine, learning to think like a sailor (not a motor-boater with sails), and why how you recover from a mistake tells you more than whether you make one. We talk navigation then and now. Tom argues that modern electronics are brilliant—but can diminish us if we forget the craft. He explains why raster charts and analogue plotting still earn a place on an iPad, and how his AngelNav approach lets you keep navigating if GPS goes dark. Starlink, he says, has changed cruising beyond recognition—useful, yes, but it dilutes the old solitude that bred self-reliance. Tom also lifts the lid on the writing life: columns on both sides of the Atlantic, the decision to leave certain magazines over copyright, and the long road from textbooks and history to fiction. That leads to his new novel, Hurricane Force—a 1970s Caribbean sailing thriller with rave reviews (Alexander McCall Smith calls him “the Dick Francis of yachting thrillers”). We explore why he set it pre-GPS, how real people and places inspire composite characters, and why plotting a thriller sometimes needs an old roll of wallpaper more than a fancy app. Stories abound: a teenage initiation on a 25-foot gaff sloop with no engine; beating for days into current off Venezuela; sharing an anchorage (and a mishap) with Don Street; ship-handling lessons from the merchant service that still apply to tying up a 45-footer with two people and no drama. Throughout, Tom keeps circling one idea: seamanship is joyful competence—clear thinking, tidy lines, and the confidence to make landfall by the stars if you must. If you love traditional craft, bluewater problem-solving, or just a well-told sea story, this one’s for you. We cover: • Learning under canvas: why starting engine-free rewires your seamanship • The philosophy behind analogue-first navigation on digital tools • The romance and reality of long passages then vs. now • How Hurricane Force was born, shelved, and reborn—plus hints at the sequel • Practical ship-handling tips yacht owners forget (and examiners notice) Pour a brew, settle in, and let one of yachting’s great raconteurs remind you why we go to sea in the first place, and why the best safety gear lives between your ears. During SIBS, PG jumped onboard the incredible Ferretti 1000 SkyDeck — the biggest yacht at the show — to share why Italian-made lighting makes such a difference on vessels of this calibre. When you integrate Gineico’s Italian downlights and marine fittings, you transform the atmosphere onboard. The lighting becomes almost invisible in the ceiling, yet the effect is unmistakable: • Soft, balanced illumination • Reduced lateral glare • Clear night-time views without reflections • A warm, residential-level ambience that feels like a luxury home This is the standard owners expect on a yacht like the Ferretti 1000 — lighting that elevates every space and makes time on the water more comfortable, more stylish and more enjoyable.
