In this episode we set off on a five day sail across the bay of Biscay with ARC Portugal. Three days in we get news of a force 10 storm crossing our path. The fleet of yachts have to run for cover, some head into open water and have to sit out the storm at sea. Two of them with no engine. We try and outrun the storm and make port Northern Spain. There's lots of information in this episode on sailing as part of a rally and what it's like to attempt the Bay of Biscay. There are good timers too. We play with dolphins, experience lovely sunrises and sunsets, rainbows as well as the steep swells and angry seas Biscay in notorious for. Some boats have to heave to for 48 hours as the storm passes, heading for the safety of deeper water. With the children leaving home we decided to sell our house in the UK and buy a boat in Holland. After two years refitting our Hans Christian 48T we have now set off a world voyage. We are retiring early because we want to attempt this voyage in good health and while we're fit and strong enough to really enjoy it. We will have to work a bit as we go until we can draw our pensions and we honestly don't know how well that will work. In our real lives we are journalists and filmmakers so it was only natural for use to document our travels by filming the journey. We aim to produce a professional standard vlog of the whole trip and try to give the viewer a real insight into what it's like to live and travel on a 48 foot sailboat. Our first aim is to sail South. After a winter getting iced in on the Markermeer in the Netherlands Judy insisted on warmer weather! So if you start from Episode 1 you will see us setting off from Eastbourne in the UK and travelling along the South Coast to Plymouth to enter a rally called ARC Portugal. Our first goal is to reach the Mediterranean and that means sailing across the infamous Bay of Biscay. This was a very good test for our boat as the bay lived up to it's fearsome reputation and split the whole fleet with a force 10 storm. Storm Miguel cut through our path and meant we had to run to mainland Spain to escape the massive seas and fearsome winds. Six boats couldn't make it in time and spent several very uncomfortable days at sea. The fleet had several broken boats, but thankfully no injured people. And this was just Episode 2! The excitement continued for the rest of our trip to the Med. Dolphins played in our bow wave, we sampled fantastic local foods and wines, great port in Porto! We found some beautiful anchorages and visit some wonderful historic places like Lisbon in Portugal, Cadiz in Spain and the fascinating port of Gibraltar. We will show you what it's like to winter in the Mediterranean, how much it all costs and give hints and tips on where to go how to save money with your boat and the places you stay. We are also talking to other sailors. After years of broadcasting journalism we know how to get peoples stories and we regularly film other sailors to show their boats and lifestyle as well as ours. We can always learn from others. Our long term plan is to spend a few years in the Mediterranean, on our list of place we want to visit are; Mallorca, Malta, Corsica, Sardinia, Sicily, Greece, Turkey, Croatia, Montenegro, Albania, Italy, Tunisia, to name but a few! Can we make MOONSHINE and still live off solar power? Join us for a typical day of our self isolation on our 53 foot sailboat home! It just so happens to be our 56th day of being away from civilization in this uninhabited island paradise. We wake up, do some normal stuff like eat and all that, but then Brian decides to use our excess solar power by brewing up a batch of moonshine. He also wires up our power inverter so we can run the laundry off the solar and batteries and save even more diesel fuel. After our daily chores are done I head into the island for a walk and Brian goes spear fishing to catch us some dinner, which turns out to be a conch and grouper chowder. YUMMY!!! It's 5:30AM and squalls are ripping through the anchorage. A sailboat drags past us and ends up hard aground on the beach. Now it's a race against time to get her off and afloat before the tide drops leaving them stranded in the Dry Tortugas Seaplane landing zone! The only problem is they have no windlass and their dinghy painter has jammed up the prop- leaving them without power and disabled. After an incredible downwind sail we find ourselves back in the Dry Tortugas, waiting for a weather window to make the 300 mile sail to Mexico. The weather is incredibly calm and we find ourselves taking advantage by paddle boarding and scuba diving our hearts out. All is well until a front moves through and puts the entire anchorage on a lee shore. A few boats drag right past us without event but then in the middle of the night one actually ends up on the beach. It's all hands on deck to get our gear and assist with our neighbors to literally winch them back into deeper water using our spare anchors and line. For more sailing around the World Action! Prepare to be boarded! What if the worst nightmare suddenly became a reality? How would you react if you were boarded? It's day 5 at sea and we're approaching a critical point in our passage. Our mission thus far is to make as much progress to the East as possible. There are two reasons for this. 1) It puts us further away from the Nicaragua coast and the piracy problems that have plagued these waters. 2) Improves our angle to the wind and comfort level once we turn South towards Panama. Sailing from Cape Town to La Reunion is an off-the-beaten-track 3,000 NM route in some of the roughest waters on the planet. Delos is ready and our new crew has arrived! Who would of thought the Skeleton Coast would be covered with thousands of dolphins, seals and PENGUINS!? Definitely not us, so we sure were surprised when we pulled into our anchorage at Mercury Island in Spencer Bay. After making friends with Penguin Man (who has been living on an island of over ten thousand penguins for TWENTY YEARS), we paddle boarded with a massive seal colony, explored a beached shipwreck from the 40's, and spent the rest of the day sappin' brews in our hammocks on Delos. It's days like this that make us so incredibly grateful to be on this journey, and have the chance to share it with all of you. Let us know what you think! Sailing through some of the worst weather we've ever seen on Delos with massive squalls of solid 40 knots, gusting into the 50's. The crew gets bashed around by the wind and currents as we crawl our way south and east. We're all sleep deprived, hungry, and knocked silly when we finally reach our turning point and point the bow at Cocos Keeling. After 16 days and 1,800 miles at sea we make land fall in a tropical paradise in the middle of the Indian Ocean! Our Mission It’s simple really- we just want to make you SMILE! Every boat is a compromise, no one boat is perfect. But IF you have the money, THIS is the absolute dream to live on, and sail around the world! Welcome to S/V Monoceros! A 2008 48' Fountaine Pajot. After several years of living, sailing, and working on this gorgeous catamaran. It's no great leap to say that would easily sell for $500,000! Though I don't think they're interested in selling anytime soon. Now half a million dollars might seem like a lot. But when you consider what it can do. And the current housing market..... I think this boat is worth that hefty price tag..... Though I certainly won't be affording one anytime soon! How this happened: I first met the owners John & Tina whiling exploring with my Highfield 310 dinghied into the well protected bay they were anchored in less than a week before filming this tour. They immediately embodied the cruiser style welcome that I've come to know and love about the sailing community. Welcoming me onboard, and showing me around their magnificent catamaran. I made the incorrect assumption that they bought the boat like this. But as the days went by and I got to know them more and more. It's crystal clear that their combined handwork and dedication is the reason this boat is the way it is now. John handles the major repairs & upgrades.
