I have been away from my boat for two weeks and am wrapping up this leg of research in Japan’s longevity hotspots. After speaking with locals, experts, and elders, one truth keeps rising to the surface: longevity begins in the mind. Yes—diet, movement, and microbiome all matter. But Japan has taught me that mindset may matter most. In English, we speak of the Fountain of Youth. In Japan, there is 清心の泉 (Seishin-no-Izumi)—the inner spring of a clear, spirited heart. Die Arbeiten am Kiel gehen voran. Zumindest solange, bis ein großes Tiefdruckgebiet aus dem Norden anrückt. Es bringt eine angenehme Abkühlung um 10 Grad, aber auch heftigen Regen. Die Prognosen warnen vor 200 Liter Regen auf einem Quadratmeter in 48 Stunden. Immerhin, so meine Hoffnung, wird dann das Deck vom Sand und Dreck gereinigt. Doch mit dem Regen offenbart sich das nächste Problem. Im Motorraum sammelt sich Wasser, der Abfluss aus dem Cockpit ist defekt. Ein vergleichsweise kleines Problem. Beim Wechseln des Schlauches schaue ich mir nochmal das Seeventil genauer an. Der Hebel ließ sich zwar problemlos umlegen, aber irgendwie ging mir das zu leicht. Und tatsächlich, die Kugel im Seeventil sitzt fest, die Verbindung zum Hebel ist gebrochen. Mir schwant Übles. Also demontiere ich alle Schläuche von den Seeventilen, um sie überprüfen. Das Ergebnis: Fünf Ventile müssen getauscht werden. Dummerweise gibt es sie hier nur in minderer Qualität, dafür zum dreifachen Preis. Und dann ist da noch die Sache mit Toilette und der Schlange auf dem Steg. Immerhin, Arzum ist zurück an Bord.

This week aboard GOAT 2.0, we dive head-first into the challenge of understanding and trusting our new B&G navigation system. Even though the setup includes some of the best gear B&G offers — the Zeus S3 multifunction display, Halo 24 radar, and NAC-3 autopilot computer — things just don’t feel quite right compared to our old Furuno system. I spend the entire week trying to configure, test, and sail with this technology, only to keep wondering: is newer really better? ⚙️ OUR CURRENT B&G SETUP B&G Zeus S3 Multifunction Display The Zeus S3 is B&G’s flagship sailing chartplotter, designed to integrate navigation, radar, autopilot, and sailing data on one screen. Tech Highlights: Ultra-bright SolarMAX HD touch display (9", 12" or 16") Quad-core processor for ultra-fast chart rendering Pre-loaded C-MAP DISCOVER™ charts Dedicated sailing features: laylines, wind plot, polar data, race panel NMEA2000 & Ethernet networking Even with all these specs, I find the software sluggish and unintuitive compared to the precision and simplicity of Furuno’s TZ Touch 3. B&G Halo 24 Pulse-Compression Radar The Halo 24 is B&G’s short-to-medium range radar designed for instant startup and 360° scans every second. Tech Highlights: 24-inch solid-state dome Pulse-compression for close- and long-range detection (6 m – 48 nm) InstantOn™ mode for quick activation VelocityTrack™ Doppler target-speed tracking Dual-range mode for simultaneous near/far targets Despite its power, the user interface feels clunky compared to Furuno’s clean overlay and target-acquisition logic, making me doubt its reliability when things get rough. B&G NAC-3 Autopilot Computer This is the brain of the system — a heavy-duty autopilot computer designed for large yachts. Tech Highlights: Drives systems up to 30,000 kg (66,000 lbs) Fully integrated with B&G helm displays and Triton² instruments Steering algorithms tuned for sailing performance NMEA2000 network compatible It’s a powerful machine, but the tuning feels overly sensitive and unpredictable, something that doesn’t inspire confidence offshore. 🐟 THE BRIGHT SIDE Amid all the tech frustration, the ocean gave us an incredible moment: we caught a 20 kg bacoreta tuna! It was our biggest catch yet — enough to fill the freezer and our hearts after a long week of debugging electronics. So, while B&G keeps testing my patience, the sea keeps rewarding it. This was my very first swim with our little humpback whale buddy who ended up spending so much time with us. I was so excited I could hardly believe I was actually in the water with him — I even kept talking to him like he could understand every word. He circled back again and again, slowing down each time to check me out. There are several incredible close-ups of his eye as he glides past me, and the whale song is so loud you can feel it vibrating through your chest. One of the most beautiful parts of the encounter was his mom, calmly cruising just below us the entire time, patiently waiting while he finished visiting with me. GRACE - my WELSFORD 'Tread Lightly' yacht. There were loads of little scratches, rubs and nicks/bumps as well as some gravel rash and a bit of paint wear on the chines and bottom - from the trailer rollers. The hull was sanded, given 2 (or in some places 3) coats of primer/undercoat and 2x coats of Marine gloss enamel. Cabin exterior and both transoms were also sanded and have 4-6 coats of Goldspar varnish. Rub rails were removed, sanded, undercoated and have 2 coats of paint. Blue stripe was re-painted as were the letters for her name. Decks were given 2x coats of Don't Slip/Kiwi Grip, and new poly/foam deck padding was glued in the cockpit. Whew! It started with scratches, but Grace has 11 years of use under her belt - I'm happy!

Mit unserer Topaz Magno geht’s noch einmal raus in die Kieler Bucht – direkt vor dem Olympiahafen Kiel-Schilksee. Bei 4 Beaufort und ablandigem Wind erleben wir ein richtig agiles kleines Sportboot. Die Magno ist mit nur ca. 3,94 m Länge, 1,56 m Breite und rund 95 kg Rumpfgewicht ein echtes Leichtgewicht. Das Großsegel ca. 8 m², die Fock rund 2 m² und der Gennaker ca. 10–11 m² machen die Jolle perfekt, um das Gennaker-Segeln zu üben – aber eben auch ziemlich kippelig. Das spüren wir sofort: die ersten Kenterungen lassen nicht lange auf sich warten. Insgesamt werden es 6 Kenterungen – jedes Mal schnell aufrichten, Wasser rausfahren und weiter geht’s. Genau das macht den Reiz aus: wenig Trägheit, direktes Lenkverhalten und jede kleine Gewichtsverlagerung spürt man sofort. Wenn die Magno ins Gleiten kommt, spielt die klassische Rumpfgeschwindigkeit von ca. 9 km/h keine Rolle mehr – mit Gennaker und genug Wind kommen wir zeitweise auf 16 km/h und mehr. Für Einsteiger ist die Magno aufgrund ihrer Stabilität beim Aufrichten perfekt zum Lernen geeignet – aber man muss aktiv segeln und Gewicht trimmen! Wir segeln Höhe, üben Wenden, fahren lange Schläge und probieren Manöver im Trapez. Dabei wechseln wir Rollen: mal steuert einer nur mit der Pinne, mal bedienen wir Großsegel und Fock gemeinsam. Im Sommer 2024 segeln wir den Roskildefjord in's Zentrum der Wikinger. Dänische Nachbarlieger warnen uns vor dem gefährlichen Fahrwasser und bei Jan Werner heißt es sogar "kriminelles Fahrwasser!" Nix dran, gut betonnt kommt man in einen gut organisiertern Hafen. Die Stadt hat allerhand zu bieten, doch das Zentrum der WIkinger ist 11 km weiter, in Lejre. Davon erzählt dieses Video.
