Last weekend saw Round 6 of the RS21 UK & Ireland Cup hosted by Rutland Sailing Club, where sailors were greeted with sunshine and strong winds across both days of racing. Saturday’s racing kicked off with a steady 20 knots across flat water, which made for tight mark rounding's and close competition throughout the fleet. As the day went on, races 3 and 4 brought slightly lighter yet gusty winds, turning the course into a game of snakes and ladders. The day wrapped up with the class’s signature pontoon drinks, followed by their AGM and a three-course dinner at the club. On Sunday, sailors reunited for breakfast before heading back out for another sunny day of super-close racing. With four races sailed in 15-knot conditions, the action was as tight as ever. At one point, six boats were overlapped at a single leeward gate! After an exhilarating day on the water, the weekend concluded with their prize giving. The RS21 Class Association would like to thank Rutland Sailing Club for their fantastic race management, hospitality, and participation with their club boats joining the fleet. The collaboration between the RS21 Class and Rutland Sailing Club was a true success. Mary Jane Gibson is a writer and performer who spent four of the best summers of her life as a deckhand and cook on the M/V Angie, a salmon tender operating out of Craig, AK. She is also the baby sister of the incredible marine conservationist Caroline Gibson. Mary Jane is the former culture editor of High Times magazine, and now writes for a number of outlets about all sorts of things. She also makes sandwiches for herself and talks about sexism in her My Sandwich, My Choice series on Instagram and Substack. Baja California’s Magdalena Bay is home to some of the most incredible animals in the ocean. The warm waters and upwelling bring in huge amounts of baitfish that in turn are hunted by striped marlin, California sea lions, dolphins, whales, and sometimes even sharks. While the main focus of the trip is bait balls of sardines and mackerel and the animals predating on them, we can also encounter many other migrating species, such as Humpback whales, schooling mobula rays, and possibly other surprise guests!
