Continuing our journey on our Seawind 1160, up the Gulf Coast of Florida. We finally get a chance to put up the sails on the new boat! If we had the dogs aboard too, we’d actually be true to our name. ;) It was a leisurely day of sailing and motorsailing up to Cayo Costa State Park where we spent the night at anchor. On the way we took a swim off the boat in the most beautifully calm water, and Josh inspected the hulls from sea level. I had fun giving the GoPro Hero5 its first splash around, both while swimming and dangling from the boat - I’m yet to figure out the best angle for those cool through-the-water shots though. I also, finally, saw some dolphins close-up. I wasn’t sure if I’d captured them on camera, but you get to see them briefly. I grin like a kid in a candy store every time I see these beautiful creatures, although I had to laugh when Josh proclaimed that Florida is “dirty with dolphins”. I’m definitely the more excitable one … After a relaxing sail, we decided to take the dinghy to shore to explore the town, but we were faced with yet more engine issues - this time the outboard was the culprit. We’ll be having it inspected and hopefully repaired or cleaned soon. The pups will be joining our voyages in April. And we’ll make sure to give you a peek at them over the winter months in Boston. I went to visit the Zipline blood delivery service in Rwanda. Over 24000 units of blood delivered so far without incident. I'm amazed the rest of the world isn't doing this yet. They cut the deliver time from 5 hours in the worst case to a maximum of 45 minutes, with most orders delivered in 20. They're were 6 deliveries in the hour and a half I spent onsite.

This time on Sailing Intermission cabin fever got the best of us. Our 9.9 Mercury outboard refused to start but that didn’t stop our escape. Luckily a nice pontoon boat was available for rent, and we blasted off for a nearby island. The island was full of surprises. We came upon a professional kayak guide. A flock of Black Skimmers performed a lovely swooping dance. What was thought to be a sandbar turned out to be a bar made of thousands of tiny seashells. There were several horseshoe crabs. In this episode, we hop from port to port on the Kattegat Sea along the east coast of Denmark. We sail from Fredrikstad Marina to Sæby Marina to Hals Marina to Grenaa Marina and finally down to Samsø Island, which would be our last stop in Denmark. The calm anchorage of Samsø quickly becomes our new favorite anchorage - although, it could've been the mesmerizing cloudy display on the reflective waters that caught our eye the most. Along the way, we discover some charming coastal villages, the boys try out steering at the helm and we encounter a few challenges as we both get used to the sails, navigating, docking and each other (disagreeing about navigational maneuvers & the reality of danger). Sailing next to helicopter navy training & in the pathway of 2 high-speed ferries were not comfortable situations to be in (at least for Liv ;) ). Eivind's frustration rested more in docking ELANE in Hals where we had to try out a new way of docking for the first time. The weather was shifting from rain to sunshine, but we realized that when sailing, it's all about the wind direction and speed, not the beauty of the skies, that determines a fun or comfortable passage. Thankfully, we could rest & enjoy the scenery at the last anchorage in Denmark (for us) before we head off for the great endeavor of transiting the Kiel Canal!
