Mit unserer Topaz Magno geht’s noch einmal raus in die Kieler Bucht – direkt vor dem Olympiahafen Kiel-Schilksee. Bei 4 Beaufort und ablandigem Wind erleben wir ein richtig agiles kleines Sportboot. Die Magno ist mit nur ca. 3,94 m Länge, 1,56 m Breite und rund 95 kg Rumpfgewicht ein echtes Leichtgewicht. Das Großsegel ca. 8 m², die Fock rund 2 m² und der Gennaker ca. 10–11 m² machen die Jolle perfekt, um das Gennaker-Segeln zu üben – aber eben auch ziemlich kippelig. Das spüren wir sofort: die ersten Kenterungen lassen nicht lange auf sich warten. Insgesamt werden es 6 Kenterungen – jedes Mal schnell aufrichten, Wasser rausfahren und weiter geht’s. Genau das macht den Reiz aus: wenig Trägheit, direktes Lenkverhalten und jede kleine Gewichtsverlagerung spürt man sofort. Wenn die Magno ins Gleiten kommt, spielt die klassische Rumpfgeschwindigkeit von ca. 9 km/h keine Rolle mehr – mit Gennaker und genug Wind kommen wir zeitweise auf 16 km/h und mehr. Für Einsteiger ist die Magno aufgrund ihrer Stabilität beim Aufrichten perfekt zum Lernen geeignet – aber man muss aktiv segeln und Gewicht trimmen! Wir segeln Höhe, üben Wenden, fahren lange Schläge und probieren Manöver im Trapez. Dabei wechseln wir Rollen: mal steuert einer nur mit der Pinne, mal bedienen wir Großsegel und Fock gemeinsam. This week we follow Ryan on one of his final marine projects — a custom-built fishing module for a Rodman 31. The brief was simple: create a practical, durable solution for serious fishing. The result is a bespoke unit incorporating a live well, sink with running water, and dedicated tackle storage — all designed to fit neatly within the boat’s existing layout, replacing a clever C-shaped settee that lifts clear of the outboards. We join the build from start to finish, from workshop fabrication through to final installation at Birdham Pool, with a look around the boatyard and some of the other projects Ryan has been involved in. Beneteau First 36 SE: barca a vela da regata ad alte prestazioni Il Beneteau First 36 SE è una barca pensata per chi ama la vela sportiva e le competizioni. Il pozzetto è progettato in modo essenziale e funzionale, con ogni elemento studiato per ottenere massime prestazioni in regata. La posizione del timoniere è centrale e avanzata rispetto ai modelli tradizionali: non troviamo più le classiche ruote del timone, ma una barra diretta che garantisce controllo immediato e sensibilità durante la navigazione. Tra gli elementi tecnici più interessanti troviamo: Trasto randa centrale Winch Harken Performance da regata Armamento completo in carbonio Layout del ponte ottimizzato per la velocità Controlli progettati per gestione in equipaggio ridotto Tutto è pensato per avere tra le mani una barca da corsa pura. Cockpit e postazione di governo Uno degli aspetti più innovativi del First 36 SE è la disposizione delle manovre. Dalla posizione del timoniere è possibile controllare praticamente tutto: vele di prua scotta randa carrello paterazzo Questo è fondamentale nelle regate offshore in doppio (double handed), dove spesso una sola persona deve gestire completamente la barca. Il timoniere può quindi governare e regolare le vele senza lasciare la barra del timone, migliorando sicurezza ed efficienza in navigazione. Tecnologia di bordo: sistema E-Bar Una soluzione tecnologica molto interessante è il sistema E-Bar. Questo dispositivo elettronico permette al timoniere di regolare l'inclinazione delle pale del timone tramite due semplici pulsanti. Il sistema agisce su un pistone che modifica l'angolo tra le due pale in funzione di: andatura condizioni meteo assetto della barca Questo consente di ottimizzare il controllo e la performance durante la regata. Interni minimal ma funzionali Gli interni del Beneteau First 36 SE sono progettati con una filosofia chiara: ridurre il peso mantenendo il minimo comfort necessario per la navigazione offshore. Tra le soluzioni adottate troviamo: paglioli in sandwich alleggerito accessori della cucina e del carteggio in carbonio porte cabine ultra leggere con chiusura magnetica Le cabine di poppa sono pensate per le regate offshore in doppio. Il letto può essere trasformato in branda con telo anti-rollio, permettendo ai due membri dell’equipaggio di riposare comodamente durante i turni. La cabina di prua invece può essere utilizzata come velaio per lo stivaggio delle vele di prua. Prua e piano velico ottimizzati per ORC Il First 36 SE è stato progettato anche con l’obiettivo di essere competitivo nelle regate ORC. Per questo motivo troviamo: Bompressso molto lungo (circa 2 metri) Doppio attacco per gennaker e code zero Attacchi strutturali per stay sail Queste vele aggiuntive permettono di migliorare stabilità e performance soprattutto nelle andature portanti. Anche i dettagli apparentemente minori, come le bitte abbattibili, sono progettati per evitare che scotte e cime si incastrino durante le manovre. PEGGY BAWN is a rare thing indeed. The number of surviving vessels from pioneering Clydeside yacht designer George Lennox Watson’s lifetime (1851-1904) can be counted on a careless carpenter’s fingers. Long gone are his huge America’s Cup challengers and “Big Class” racing yachts, and only two of the fleet of palatial steam yachts – the superyachts of their day – from his Glasgow drawing boards are known to survive, in fabulous condition although barely recognisable from their original appearance. https://www.sandemanyachtcompany.co.uk/yacht/302/PEGGY%20BAWN It is left to PEGGY BAWN to carry the flame for Watson’s groundbreaking mid-1890s work in setting the standard for moderation in sailing yacht design, work that has never been challenged – only endorsed by those who followed his lead through the 20th century, especially Olin J. Stephens, who was a self-confessed Watson fan. PEGGY BAWN’s gilded “fiddle” bow was anachronistic even at her launching in 1894, partly a past fad, partly practical, undoubtedly beautiful – an interim stage in the development of extending immersed waterlines for faster sailing when heeled with a more buoyant hull – but it conceals the fact that when her award-winning restoration team began assessing what they’d found in a County Waterford hay barn in 2003, they quickly realised that the “numbers” – yacht designer speak for the various ratios that define a hull – were simply a scaled-down version of those for Watson’s famous royal racing cutter Britannia of 1893. Her name gave rise to the so called “Britannia Ideal”, as she was and is considered the epitome of sea kindliness. PEGGY BAWN's present owner can vouch for that from fourteen seasons of racing and cruising aboard her in northern and Mediterranean Europe, and east coast USA. PEGGY BAWN is quite simply the best behaved yacht any of them had had the pleasure to sail. And her rebuild and restoration set new standards for documentation and authenticity. She's special.
