In this episode, Ruwan did his first mast climbing to fix the steaming light. Rulin launched and tried out the new inflatable paddle board we bought from South Africa. We continue with the repairing of deck cracks for DAYS. It is an endless job if you have a very picky eye. Fibreglass dusk is not fun on your skin and the wind is always likely to pay along with the game. But surprisingly kids will always find some fun to play, even in the fibreglass dust 😄. Our Epirb is back and at the club we found new fun ...

One of our NSSC Sailability members, Jazz Turner, featured in "Woman's Hour" on BBC Radio 4 at the end of her epic Project FEAR ("face everything and rise") journey. Jazz is terminally ill with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS), and is a full-time wheelchair user. After 28 days sailing around the UK and Ireland single-handed, non-stop and unassisted, Jazz arrived back at Brighton Marina around 13:30 on Monday 30th June 2025. Jazz describes how she is now making plans to take part in the WorldStar 2026 Round the World race, which will start from the Royal Western Yacht Club in Plymouth on 26/09/2026, and how she needs help in acquiring a suitable vessel to achieve this incredible challenge. Jazz has been raising money for the Newhaven and Seaford Sailability fund. Her fundraising page can be accessed at the following link. *Fundraising page:* https://www.gofundme.com/f/project-fear *Journey tracker:* https://projectfear.uk/Expedition-Log/Tracking Aired on BBC Radio 4 on 12/08/2025. Source: https://www.spreaker.com/episode/a-little-update-on-things-and-my-plans-for-this-month-s-youtube-videos--60034713 In this episode, I’ll be talking about a couple of things. I haven’t update for you guys and I have a video that I plan on doing next week.
On a Charter Yacht, you can explore locations that are only accessible by yacht, with pristine beaches, turquoise waters, secluded coves, and majestic scenery. Stroll along white sandy beaches without another soul in sight. Listen to the soothing sound of the ocean and feel the gentle breeze on your skin. Discover a new piece of paradise each day and savor in your surroundings. www.thecharteryachtcompany.com
Sailing Sicily’s north coast, we cast off from Palermo and hop our way to Trapani with smart, protected anchorages that make this route a pleasure—not a slog. We work the lee behind Capo Gallo/Mondello before sliding past the dramatic Faraglioni of Scopello and the coves of the Zingaro Reserve. A calm night in Castellammare del Golfo gives us time to wander the waterfront and explain why this bay is such a reliable stop for cruisers. Along the way we break down what makes each anchorage “logical” (approach, shelter from prevailing winds/swell, dinghy access) so you can plan your own passage. We detour ashore to the Mangiapane Cave near Custonaci—an astonishing rock-shelter hamlet frozen in time—then continue past San Vito lo Capo and the clear waters of Macari/Cornino. In Trapani we take the cable car up to medieval Erice for sweeping views and a taste of almond pastries and Genovesi. Back at sea level, we film a practical tutorial: how to fuel in cross-winds safely, including spring lines, prop-walk, and leaving cleanly. Foodies, don’t miss our plates of Busiate alla Trapanese and Cous Cous al Pesce—two must-try local specialties. If you’re cruising this coast, this episode packs route logic, shore highlights, and seamanship tips into one watch. Drop your favorite north-coast stop in the comments so others can add it to their plan. Our channel is all about sailing the Mediterranean. We help anyone who wants to sail the Mediterranean, whether they are brand new at it, aspiring to go, or just arm-chair traveling. We generally post about our adventures with beautiful scenery and helpful hints, but we also post about the challenges too and how we resolve them. Attitude is everything!

In this series we are farming the location challenges. The focus is on completing the challenges while completing the storyline and quests. In Episode 7, I knock out the location challenges for The Highlands and The Fridge.

Today is the day of the solar eclipse across North America, the only one that will touch the continent until 2024 (when only three states will experience totality) therefore: Happy Solar Eclipse Day! I thought I would put a few thoughts down relating to the historical and scientific history of solar eclipses to give you Dad's EVEN more to amaze and thrill your kids with.... as you always do..... Once I push the button on this I am off outside to watch the partial eclipse we will experience here in Nova Scotia with three generations of my family- a first for me and something I am very much looking forward to! Water, water everywhere: and not a drop to drink. When there are only a few pints of water to drink in the life raft and no indication of immediate rescue, it is essential for the life raft leader (who is not also necessarily the captain of the lost vessel) to immediately become extremely smart about water usage, water collection and the problems inherent in limiting humans access to water. And all that, BEFORE dehydration robs all of the survivors of the mental and physical capacity to help themselves. If you would like to listen to serialized stories of the sea, selected and read by CSM, check out the Mariner's Library Podcast; available on all podcast platforms. https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/the-mariners-library/id1710666955 If you would like to check out The Mariner Youtube Channel - we have gear reviews, how to videos, seamanship training videos and on the water reports. In this episode I read some more listener questions and ramble on into long winded tangents about subjects that are vaguely connected to the original question. We discuss asymmetric versus symmetric spinnakers, fitting bowsprits to older displacement boats, a little more on hyperbolic navigation inaccuracies, safety when sailing with inexperienced family members and much, much more. There has been a break in the podcast due to me travelling to Europe to pick up a new boat for the Veteran's Sailing Program, but I'm back now and what a story I have to tell! Nothing's ever simple with boats! Grab a cup of tea and sit yourself down and have a listen to the first part of my tale- just getting to the boat through Covid Lockdown travel restrictions, then losing my financing, then crazy contractual wrangling, cross country drives over the Sierra Nevada Mountains, extreme project triage and a final workable solution which did not resemble in anyway the plan we had at the outset. It's good old fashioned problem solving nightmare and another stage in my education that maintenance of the overall objective despite critical set backs is all that counts. Just before you go.... As always Questions & Tangents 5 hovers close to the optimal track suggested by this week's listener questions before tacking off onto a flyer to 'knock the corners' with whatever happens to be floating through my head! Topics include (but are not limited to!): Hydrogen Fuel for boats, Synthetic rigging on cruising boats, anchoring, setting the depth sounder correctly and delivering Longobarda home to Nova Scotia this summer. In this episode I continue reading Capt. Joshua Slocum's excellent narrative of his solo circumnavigation of the world in 1895. In chapters 11 & 12 Slocum starts out first in Juan Fernandez ,where he visits the cave the Alexander Selkirk lived in for four years and four months, a story that became the inspiration for 'Robinson Crusoe' Next Slocum sails 72 days non-stop to Apia in Samoa where he meets the Fanny Van de Graf Louis Stevenson (!) the widow of Robert Louis Stevenson. This episode I interview Philip Bachmann a sailor I have completed many miles of offshore sailing with.
