After 3 years of mild winters with less than normal rainfall and snowfall, the water levels on Lake Michigan are down considerably this year leading to innumerable problems. With the water levels being down on the Fox River, we had difficulty getting the boat launched. We had to wait for a day when the water was up enough to launch. We had the same problem with putting the mast back on. Eventually, we had to bring in an industrial crane with enough reach to be able to lift the mast out to the boat. There is also a mounting and lingering concern as to whether we will be able to get the boat into our slip at Wave Pointe Marina. For now, that is a problem for another day. Ep 90 - Searching for Manatees with Sailing Life on Jupiter and Sailing Free Spirit Today, Jamie and Princess from Sailing Life on Jupiter were in the area and we decided to meet up and show them the local wildlife! Manatees!! We took More Better out for a day trip to Crystal River to cruise around Kings Bay and 3 Sisters where the manatees usually hide for the winter. Oakley and His Royal Majesty King George were along of the trip. Both were equally jealous of the other and their respective mommies. But they got along well after a while. They even went for swim. Later we stopped off for some dinner and finished out the day with dessert before we parted ways and they continued on their journey and we returned back to our lives. Not a How-To – Just Real Engine Maintenance on a Yanmar 3YM30. Servicing the engine isn’t glamorous, but it’s one of those jobs that really matters. In this episode, I tackle a full engine service on our Yanmar 3YM30 – including an oil and fuel filter change, chasing down a leak, and replacing a broken impeller that could have caused far bigger problems if it had gone unnoticed. This definitely isn’t an instructional step-by-step, but it’s an honest look at what’s involved when you take on your own engine maintenance. There’s plenty of “boat yoga” along the way – arms and legs at odd angles, tight spaces, dropped tools, and moments of doubt – but we get there in the end. Finding the leak turned into a more expensive exercise than planned, but it also uncovered the failed impeller, making it a timely and worthwhile discovery. It’s a good reminder that sometimes the frustrating jobs are the ones that save you down the track. If you’re thinking about servicing your own engine, or just curious about what really goes on below deck, there’s plenty here to learn – and maybe a bit of reassurance that you don’t need to be a mechanic to give it a go. The 1983 Jeanneau Sun Fizz 40 is a highly respected performance cruiser, combining solid offshore capability with generous onboard comfort. Designed for sailors who appreciate both handling and liveability, she features a practical lifting keel (1.30 m / 2.15 m), ideal for varied cruising grounds. Powered by a reliable 41HP Perkins diesel engine, she offers dependable performance under power. Below deck, the layout includes three double cabins and a spacious saloon with upholstery renewed in 2018. Two Jabsco Twist’n’Lock manual heads were replaced in 2022. The warm teak interior creates a classic atmosphere, while the well-appointed galley is fitted with a gimballed gas stove and oven, refrigerator, and a shore-powered hot water system. A Magma charcoal barbecue and approximately 400 litres of fresh water capacity further enhance onboard comfort. On deck, she is well prepared for sailing, equipped with a Hood full-batten mainsail, Elvström furling genoa, and a Doyle triradial spinnaker. Sail handling is managed by eight Lewmar winches, four of which are self-tailing, ensuring efficient and controlled manoeuvring. Navigation equipment includes a Raymarine Type 150/400 autopilot with Smart Controller, ST60 wind instruments, NASA Clipper Duet depth and log, Plastimo Olympic 135 compass, fixed and handheld VHF radios, and a 1000W electric windlass. Additional features include a Besenzoni folding passerelle/swim platform, Duarry 8-person liferaft (inspected 2023/2024), Kapa tender with 8HP Yamaha outboard engine, Victron 40A battery charger, shore power connection, and a Panasonic HiFi audio system. While some minor attention is required (thermostat replacement, mast antenna, depth transducer, and window sealing), she represents an excellent opportunity to acquire a spacious and capable Mediterranean cruiser at an attractive price. It has been a hot minute since we last posted a video, we have missed you all! We've been busy making that money to keep funding the refit, and it has been an absolute wild ride into 2026! In this episode we step back into time...August of 2025 to be exact! We have just completed the ENTIRE CHAINPLATE INSTALL & are now beginning to put our interior back together! This of course means, trimming our teak to fit the new size (ever so slight) larger chainplates...and all that goes with it. All the teak that had spent years getting damp from leaks had to be stripped and refinished. This project is to build a budget wooden motor boat in the Mexican jungle. We are back after many things! Making the web stations and more. The making of all marine plywood takes a lot of time! This wooden motor boat is called Wooden Shoe. This is a unique project as we only using disponible wood from fallen trees. The original plans are for a 23 feet boat, but we have changed it to 25 feet and some extra cabin height. We make all frames and plywood.
