We leave Port Angeles behind, another beautiful area we hope to visit again someday, and head back out into the Strait of Juan de Fuca for the last 55 nautical miles to Neah Bay, a beautiful Makah Native American reservation surrounded by the Pacific Ocean to the west and the Strait to the north. Recreational and commercial fishing thrives here, and tourism is a big part of the economy of the area. Hiking and camping are said to be beautiful here and a trail to the tip of Cape Flattery, of which we will be rounding to head south into the Pacific looks enticing, but we are on a mission Southern Cross needs to be moved from here to San Francisco and we have a weather window that may allow for successful passage. Our biggest hurdle is anticipation and as we prepare the boat, nerves are apparent. This will be the longest passage for us all to date, and with bailout points marked on the map, we are ready. Here’s a quick video showing the anchoring system on Snow Gum - a Garcia Exploration 45. Curiously, the one thing not seen is the anchor! It’s a Spade anchor, the standard one offered by Garcia for this yacht, being a 25kg galvanised steel version. It’s holding its place very nicely in the sandy, weedy bottom, after biting and holding first time. Regards, Rick.

Motoring across Broken Bay in the rain and into Pittwater. Jan 2011.Not enough wind to sail, but I put the mainsail up hoping to catch a bit of wind. The sun appeared but not the wind on this occasion. We celebrate the good life with a bottle of Moet Champagne.
